Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige provided a major update on the upcoming Eternals movie where he teased the film would be “an immense, amazing epic…that spans tens of thousands of years.”
Feige spoke to Collider about what the Marvel Cinematic Universe landscape will look like after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home:
“Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them.”
He would then touch on the confirmed Eternals film, which is being written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo with Chloe Zhao on board to direct.
“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.”
He would also add that Marvel Studios is looking at tapping into comic book legend Jack Kirby’s epic Eternals storyline.
“You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
The Eternals are an ancient race that were created by the Celestials through genetic experiments on early humanity. They created humanity, the Eternals, and the Deviants through their experiments.
The Eternals and Deviants would battle throughout the ages with the Eternals working to protect Earth and even mix with their human cousins.
Early reports about the film indicated it would focus on the Eternal known as Sersi. Sersi is a unique choice because she’s different than most Eternals in the fact that she would actually venture out in the world and live among humanity. On a number of occasions she would actually join the Avengers. She also would be a key historical figure interacting with Merlin and Odysseus.
However, given Feige’s recent comments it appears they might be looking to introduce an ensemble team much like they did with Guardians of the Galaxy and what DC did with Justice League. And if that’s the case one can expect they will be facing a team of Deviants.
I can also see Eternals being a weirdly fun time-travel romp.
