Report: Captain Marvel Brought in Over $20 Million on Thursday

Captain Marvel reportedly earned over $20 million at the box office on Thursday.

Box Office Mojo reports that the latest Marvel Studios film starring Brie Larson earned $20.7 million on Thursday. They reveal this is the “fifth largest preview gross for an MCU title.”

They go on to predict that Captain Marvel will earn between $60 million and $70 million on opening day, which is today. They go on to state that if the film maintains its current pace it will earn between $135 million and $175 million in its opening weekend.

Our source provided us information that Disney expects the film to earn $150 million on opening weekend and $450 million total at the domestic box office. Estimates for Captain Marvel’s opening box office weekend have ranged from $80 million to $175 million.

As for the global box office, Captain Marvel has already earned $44 million in two days. However, the film hadn’t opened in China yet. Early Chinese estimates indicate the film will open to $34 million.

Captain Marvel has seen mixed reviews from critics with Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer giving it an 81% from 286 total reviews. Metacritic’s Metascore currently has the film at 65. Their score is based off of 51 reviews.

The Audience Scores on both sites paint a very different picture. The Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently at 36% with 5,216 reviews in. However, Rotten Tomatoes appears to have deleted over 50,000 reviews due to what looks like potential botting.

The User Score on Metacritic sits at 2.7 from 812 total reviews.

I don’t think it’s surprise Captain Marvel will do well at the box office. Disney strategically positioned the film between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame similar to how they positioned Black Panther before Avengers: Infinity War. Die hard Marvel Cinematic Universe fans want to know how Captain Marvel will connect to the Avengers. They want to know just how powerful she is, and what exactly they she can do especially since Nick Fury paged her in the post-credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War.

While Captain Marvel might do well at the box office, the film and more specifically the promotion and marketing of the film by Marvel and Brie Larson could leave a mark similar to Disney’s The Last Jedi which divided the fanbase and created a PR nightmare for the studio with many fans stating they no longer had interest in the franchise they loved and supported for years.

How much money do you think Captain Marvel will bring in opening weekend? Do you think the film and its marketing could significantly damage the Marvel brand similar to The Last Jedi?
