Report: New Female Character Joining Star Wars Episode IX
A new report indicates Star Wars Episode IX will see the addition of a brand new female character.
The report from That Hashtag Show indicates Disney and Lucasfilm are looking for a 27- 35 year old to play a character called “KARINA.” The report indicates the character is described as “a younger Charlize Theron with street smarts and a sharp wit.” It also indicates the actor will need “a good sense of humor, solid comedic timing and a strong voice.”
Given the description of this character and the fact that we know Billy Dee Williams is returning as Lando Calrissian, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with a young protege. Lando would want someone who has street smarts and a sharp wit around him. I can definitely see this character being a protege of Lando Calrissian.
An earlier report indicated that Disney and Lucasfilm were looking for a 40-50 year old to play a character codenamed “MARA.”
Many Expanded Universe fans jumped at the codename believing director J.J. Abrams and the team at Lucasfilm might be looking to introduce Mara Jade onto the big screen. However, this most recent report indicates that Lucasfilm might no longer be looking for “MARA.” This could mean they might have found an actress for the role, or there might have been adjustments to the script and the character was written out.
Disney and Lucasfilm are also allegedly looking for an 18-26 African American female to play a character initially called “CARO.” This character was expected to have a lead role, but the most recent report indicates the character’s codename has changed to “LUCY” and they have been downgraded to a supporting role.
What do you make of these potential new characters? What role do you think “KARINA” will play in the final film of the trilogy?
Star Wars Episode IX is currently filming. The film is expected to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
