Report: Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Still In Development
A new report indicates Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still in development.
A report from Deadline discussing Johnson and Ram Bergman’s new business venture T-Street, which aims to create original content for movies and TV shows indicates Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still happening.
Deadline reports, “They are crafting a new film series set within the Star Wars universe, and those plans remain on the boards.”
Johnson would also comment on his Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie even hinting that he didn’t really have control over the film like he has had with previous films.
“I’m excited to open things up and get the chance to work with talented people and learn from them. In a way, this is very much in the mode of how we’ve always worked, though Star Wars was different for obvious reasons. But we’ve always thought like indie filmmakers, maintaining a degree of ownership and authorship over what we’ve done. This was a way to set up a space where we can make that happen for other filmmakers.”
Rian Johnson and Star Wars
While Deadline reports Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is still in the works, all other indications point that it might not be happening at all and if it is happening it might be only one film.
Disney and Lucasfilm recently released their upcoming movie schedule which revealed they only have three new Star Wars films on the slate. Those films will take place in 2022, 2024, and 2026. (Related: Disney Announces Plans for New Star Wars Movies Through 2026)
Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed the next film which is slated for 2022 will be done by Game of Thrones TV creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. (Related: Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Might Only Be Attached to One Star Wars Film)
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game Of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed in April that Benioff and Weiss would be working with Rian Johnson after they finished Game of Thrones.
“As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars. They’re working very closely with Rian.”
Kennedy did note that Star Wars is looking at mapping out the next decade of storytelling:
“We’re just not looking at what the next three movies might be, or talking about this in terms of a trilogy. We’re looking at: What is the next decade of storytelling?”
However, Benioff and Weiss recently signed a massive 5-year $250 million deal with Netflix. It’s unclear how this new deal affects Benioff and Weiss’ relationship with Disney and their future with Star Wars given Netflix and Disney are about to go head to head in the streaming market with the launch of Disney+ in November.
The Hollywood Reporter notes, “Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films.” (Related: Report: HBO Passes on Game of Thrones Creators – Star Wars Deal Might Be Up in the Air)
It’s quite possible they are only attached to one film at this point as confirmed by Bob Iger.
Both Iger and Kennedy have been silent on whether Johnson’s trilogy is still in the works following the backlash to Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
What do you make of Deadline’s report that Johnson’s trilogy is still a go at Star Wars? What about Johnson’s comments regarding The Last Jedi and his experience on Star Wars?
