Rumor: Marvel Studios to Gender Swap Nightmare with Eva Green for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

A recent rumor indicates Marvel Studios is planning to gender swap the villain Nightmare with actress Eva Green in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film.

The rumor stems from graphic artist Boss Logic, who took to Twitter to showcase what Eva Green could look like as Nightmare.

Boss Logic wrote, “So I wanted to work on a #DrStrange 2 piece but with the first one I wanted to focus on the villain, Nightmare in this case, rumor going around that #evagreen was being eyed for it and I’m all for it. She is a scary woman, but beautiful at the same time.”

In March 2018, Doctor Strange writer C. Robert Cargill appeared at a screening of Doctor Strange in Austin, Texas where he revealed the villain for the sequel film would be Nightmare. Cargill stated, “Nightmare will be the villain.” (Related: Doctor Strange 2 Villains Revealed)

Cargill also added Nightmare might not be the only villain running around in the film as Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo was most definitely set up as a villain in the post-credit scene of Doctor Strange.

“Marvel movies work in threes. They also work outside of their threes. Some of the better Marvel films have more than one villain in them. Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it.”

He also added that the sequel will be weirder than the first film, “That’s the thing. If we do another film it’s going to be weirder than this one. That’s the only way we’ll do another one is if we get to get weird.” (Related: Theory: Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch To Play Villain in Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness)

It’s unclear if those plans have changed. They could have given the sequel for the film was not officially announced until this past July at San Diego Comic Con. However, given the title of the sequel is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Nightmare seems to fit right in, and it definitely sounds like things will definitely get weird, at the very least they will be mad.

Nightmare

Nightmare was once the servant of the being known as Shuma-Gorath. However, he realized he was much too powerful to be a mere servant and he fled Shuma-Gorath by entering the Dream Dimension. He quickly took over the dimension and rapidly grew in power eventually becoming dependent on the fear he caused in order to survive.

While he appears as a demon-like creature in his own realm, he has been known to take on a physical form in the human realm. In fact, in one story arc he becomes Edvard Haberdash and opens up a nightclub called Club Fear. He would use Club Fear to feed off the club goers fears and increase his powers.

Nightmare is regularly depicted as a male demon when taking physical form.
