More Shazam! adventures weren’t announced as part of DC Studios’ next slate conceived by heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, even with Fury of the Gods about to release. Moreover, leading star Zachary Levi could have hurt his chances with his recent tweets against Pfizer. They coincide with the announcement so the timing is odd but the ten-year plan was already locked in place by then.

Still, if The Flash resets most everything, a big question mark is left dangling over the Shazam! family’s future. Actress Grace Caroline Currey was asked by The Direct what the future may hold but she confessed Gunn and Safran haven’t told their actors anything. “I’m not in the conversations… I’m along for the ride. And when they say, ‘Grace, it’s time,’ I’m there…” she said.

Currey also said she thinks DC and the Shazam! characters “are in good hands,” adding that as “a fan of the DC universe and a bit of a comic book nerd” herself, she is “really, really curious and excited to see what…James Gunn does and what stories he brings out.” Having worked often with Safran, she trusts him too.

“And I’ve worked with Peter [Safran] since I was 18, and he’s just so lovely,” Currey said, adding, “he really elevated the horror film genre and I’m really curious to see what they do with DC.” Continuing, she’d reaffirm a bit later that she is “really interested to see what comes up with this slate,” thinking “there’s gonna be a whole new breath” to these films.

If she gets the call to breathe whole new life into a character in the coming era, Currey dreams about playing others but still wants to come back as Mary Bromfield. “I daydream about playing any of the characters, right? Like they’re all awesome. But, I gotta say, Mary…” she decided as she felt she “was made to play her” and “privileged” to do so.

She told the story of how she was encouraged to audition for Mary by her brother, who strongly believed his sister looked the part. “When I first auditioned and Shazam wasn’t made yet, it was just announced that David [F. Sandberg] was going to be directing it, my brother was like Grace, ‘You’ve got to audition for this,’” she recalled.

“‘You are Mary.’ And he pulled out his comics of Shazam and showed me pictures of her,” Currey continued. “And we have a photo of me smiling next to one of the illustrations of Mary because he was like, ’You gotta see this side by side. You’re her. You’re her. You worked with David and you worked with Peter. This would be incredible.’”

In this film, she was upgraded to playing both Mary Bromfield and Mary Marvel. “And it’s kind of baffling to think that all the way from that day, my brother telling me about Mary, I’m here and I get to play her superhero for him,” she mused. Currey is equally excited about exploring new worlds in Fury of the Gods.

“…I just think we have a lot of worlds we’ve explored to their max. And it was kind of an unusual feeling to sit there and go, ‘This is new. What?’” she remarked at watching the completed film for the first time. Impressed, she described the sequel as a piece of superhero cinema while acknowledging “some superhero fatigue going on.”

States Currey, “We’ve had so many superhero movies, and the superhero genre’s what gets people to the theaters. But I felt like, and this is saying something because I know this story, I have [a] personal stake in this story. But I, as a fan, love this movie. I love it so much.” And the actress enthusiastically sells Shazam! 2.

She loves it so much that she urges people to “give it a shot” in theaters, opinions aside. “It’s so funny how people are quick to kind of go, ‘I’m out… I’m not excited about it.’ But [Fury of the Gods is] genuinely good. It is genuinely good and genuinely fun. And I think also we need that, we need to go to the theaters.”

For those opposed to that idea and resisting changes coming at DC Studios, Currey downplayed their opinions: “There is a lot of change with the DC Universe happening… And change is scary. Period. I think whenever there’s change, people jump to the worst-case scenario. But there’s also the possibility that it could be the best-case scenario…”
