Sheena: Queen of The Jungle Reboot Gets Green Light At Millennium Films
Millennium Films is working on a Sheena: Queen of the Jungle reboot following the success of DC Comics Wonder Woman.
Deadline reports, “Millennium Films is looking for the next Gal Gadot.” And they have good reason to be optimistic. Wonder Woman has brought in $813.2 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. Over half of that gross has come from domestic sales and the movie has soared to the #2 overall movie behind Beauty and the Beast.
Sheena: Queen of the Jungle is one of the original female comic book characters. She first appeared in the British magazine Wags #1 in 1937. She then made her stateside appearance in Fiction House’s Jumbo Comics #1 in 1938. Then in 1942 she became the first female comic book character to have her own series. She beat Wonder Woman by a few months.
Sheena was created by comic legends Will Eisner and Jerry Iger as a female counterpart to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan. Like Tarzan, she was an orphan who grew up in the jungle and learned to survive. She learned to communicate with animals and became skilled with a number of weapons such as spears, bows, and knives.
Sheena: Queen of the Jungle is no stranger to the big screen. In 1984, Tanya Roberts starred as Sheena in a movie from Columbia Pictures. Before that Irish McCalla starred as Sheena in a 26-episode TV series.
Dynamite Comics recently relaunched Sheena: Queen of the Jungle from writer Margueirte Bennett and Christina Trujillo with art by Moritat.
Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Joe Gatta, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Lati Grobman, and Christa Campbell are all on board as producers. The movie is expected to have a summer 2018 start.
