Star Wars Fan Artist Criticized for Drawing ‘Busty’ Rey, Doubles Down in Response
After a Star Wars fan-artist was attacked and insulted for drawing a ‘sexy’ version of Rey, the artist received an outpouring of support from fans of artistic freedom and doubled-down on his drawing by producing a sequel to the original image.
On October 23rd, artist devilhs, whose work regularly features ‘sexy’ depictions of fictional characters, took to his Twitter account to share his latest piece of fan-art, which featured a particularly well-endowed, hooded-Rey wielding a dual-bladed lightsaber:
I love Rey’s hood but she never wears it for some reason.#StarWars #StarWarsTheRiseOfSkywalker #Rey pic.twitter.com/6zeYB39YuY

As devilhs’ work began to be shared across social media and gain popularity, it quickly caught the attention of outraged activists who descended upon devilhs’ artwork to take issue with the more sexualized depiction of Rey and sought to ‘criticze’ devilhs by leveling misandrist insults towards him and accusing him of being sexist towards women:
This is the worst thing I have seen today why do some people have to sexualize everything

The insults began to weigh on devilhs, who took note of the stream of insults and pointed out that “In the past day I got more sexist insults than I got in my entire life.”

I get that you may dislike the drawing a lot because it meddles with your favorite character and I respect that – but I feel like saying that all men are a disease is a bit much.— devilhs (@mr_devilhs) October 25, 2019
Some people can be reasonable and say “eh, your drawing is garbage”. But a lot must take it as far as possible. Probably not even thinking how it is for Me getting more than hundred of these kind of messages non-stop for two days.

However, devilhs was not without his supporters, as numerous fan artists began to show their support for devilhs and the freedom to draw sexualized fan art by creating an outpouring of new pieces featuring ‘sexy Rey’:
Saw @mr_devilhs version of Rey from the new Star Wars trilogy, and decided to sketch her. Don’t let the bastards grind you down, man! pic.twitter.com/L1tn1c02uE

Ultimately, devilhs responded directly to his critics by producing another piece of artwork, equally as risqué, this time featuring busty Rey as a Sith:
