Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Back Tracks on Rey’s Parents

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still trying to explain his decisions from the most recent Star Wars film.

In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Johnson said Rey’s parentage is still open to interpretation. “Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it,” he said.

However, Johnson had previously stated in an interview with Collider that Kylo Ren was not lying to Rey when he tells her her parents are nobodies.

That’s what Kylo sees and that’s what he tells her and I think he’s not lying in that moment. That’s what he saw and she seems to believe it when she hears it.

However, he continued:

I’m not writing the next film, we’ll see how they handle it going forward, and as we all know in these movies, there’s always a certain point of view that’s involved. But, for me, I’ll tell you that was the … I can understand why that answer doesn’t feel good. It’s not supposed to feel good. It’s supposed to be the hardest thing she could possibly hear in that moment.

Johnson’s certain point of view quote is a reference to Obi-Wan Kenobi telling Luke why he lied to him about Darth Vader.

Johnson called the moment between Kylo Ren and Rey, Rey’s version of Vader telling Luke that he is his father.

What’s going to make life hardest on her? It would be the big ‘I am your father’ twist [from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’],

He explained this is “the hardest thing the character could possibly hear in that moment. And same thing with Rey and her parentage.”

He continued:

The easy thing would be, ‘Yes, your parents are so and so and here’s your place in the world. There you go.’ The hardest thing she could hear would be […] ‘No, you’re not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You’re going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you’re going to have to stand on your own two feet.’

This all just screams that Disney really has no clue what they are doing with this new trilogy and are just throwing paint at the wall and hoping some of it will stick. It doesn’t appear there is any kind of long-term vision and they are just flying by the seat of their pants. It doesn’t look good for the future of Star Wars films whatsoever.
