Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Suggests [SPOILER] Could Still Be Alive!
Beware of MAJOR spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ye who enter here
You’ve been warned.
There were a couple of surprising demises in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Though some were heartbreaking and controversial (Luke) some were surprisingly fun (Snoke).
But the most disappointing “death” may have been that of Captain Phasma.
After being absent for almost the entire film, Phasma appears in the brief fight scene teased in the trailer. It’s a fun scene, but one that absolutely did not live up to the hype built around the character. In fact, this would make it the 2nd film in a row that Phasma didn’t quite get her due. The character’s design has always been striking and interesting, demanding more attention. The actress portraying her, Gwendoline Christie, has been literally and metaphorically killing it on Game of Thrones for years. Why waste a wonderful actress and such a cool looking Star Wars character?
The answer is that there are many plotlines at work in Disney and Lucasfilm’s recent Star Wars films. Unfortunately, as a C or D-list villain Phasma just isn’t that significant to the overall plot. In the end, she gets just about as much screen-time as Boba Fett received in the originals. Which wasn’t much. But one thing did stand out about the character’s demise at the end of the film…
It was technically off-screen.
Though there’s nothing in the film to suggest that Phasma survives, the film never depicts her literally dying. Which in the film world could heavily imply that the character is coming back. Well, comments by some of the cast and crew at a Q&A for the film may shed some light on her fate.
From the Ashes…
Entertainment Weekly reports that after a screening of the film, Rian Johnson was asked about the characters fate. Johnson somewhat jokingly replied, “Phasma is the Kenny from South Park of the series.”
As many fans will remember, Kenny constantly dies and comes back to life in the Comedy Central series. Considering Phasma’s death was off-screen, this could be an easy way for the character to make her way into Episode IX.
Gwendoline Christie herself has plans for the characters’ return, according to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s costume designer Michael Kaplan.
The ChromeTrooper has one more major character endorsing her return from death as well, the recently deceased Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamill also stated his desire for the character to return for J.J. Abrams’ Episode IX. Hamill said, “I think she’s got to survive. She falls through the flames and lands on a big pile of rubbish.”
Right before Phasma falls “through the flames” her mask is split open. Instead of a hideous figure under the metal skin, the audience is shown simply the pale skin and beautiful iris of Gwendoline Christie. A vulnerable moment for the First Order Captain, one that humanizes her briefly before she falls to a Rebel Hero. But her story may not be finished; her mission may not be over. Finn thinks he no longer has to look over his shoulder for his former military commander.
J.J. Abrams could make his life a living hell if he decides to bring her back for Star Wars: Episode IX.
