Teen Titans Go! To The Movies Finds Their Batman
Teen Titans: The Farce Awakens
Teen Titans: Go! does not resemble the original cartoon series. Instead, it’s a lighthearted take that pokes fun at everything including DC’s own superheroes. The show doesn’t take itself seriously. At all. To the point where they’ve alienated many of their original fans, who are probably a little too old to be watching a cartoon made specifically for kids. Well, now soon audiences will be greeted with Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, the big screen adaptation of the cartoon nonsense.
A few surprising voice actors are in the film, including Will Arnett as Deathstroke / Slade Wilson. But, Will Arnett is Batman in The Lego Batman Movie. Wouldn’t it make sense to…wait, never mind. Kevin Conroy is still around! And he was on the original Teen Titans, maybe he can…nope. Well, who in the world is going to be the next Batman?
Jimmy Kimmel.
The radio personality turned TV Show Host is genuinely one of the nicest and funniest guys on TV, but his voice doesn’t “scream” Batman. He growls it! All terrible jokes aside, Kimmel pokes fun at Arnett when announcing his casting on Twitter.
Dear @ArnettWill, there’s a new #Batman in town (me) and you are what the kids call OLD NEWS… @TeenTitansMovie #TeenTitansGOMovie pic.twitter.com/2FXkaOCznq

Stick through the trailer long enough, no easy task, and you’ll hear Kimmel giving his gruff and gritty interpretation of the Batman voice. It’s not bad, considering the mocking tone of the entire film. Clearly an over-exaggerated version of Christian Bale’s rough growl. But at some point people are going to get over the joke. Christian Bale gave the best and most well-rounded performance as Batman and Bruce Wayne that audiences have ever seen. And at least Bale’s voice is memorable and non-robotic.
Satire at it’s Not-So-Best
The Lego Batman Movie made fun of DC too, but it did so while creating a fantastic movie. It had just as much heart, action, and excitement as it did jokes. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies isn’t looking to craft that same level of quality. Like any episode of Family Guy, it would seem this film is more interested in just having as many jokes as possible.
Not a bad thing. But when your entire marketing campaign and story is about making fun of other superhero movies, it’s best to be self-aware. That’s clearly not the case here, considering they didn’t seem to know Ryan Reynolds was a Marvel character before the Green Lantern. Just bad marketing for a film that seems to be about making fun of bad marketing.
Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is probably not going to win over any new fans to the show. It’s not any more serious; it doesn’t have a different setting or characters. Most importantly, it doesn’t seem to be about anything other than trying to make a movie. Let’s hope the folks behind this flick can surprise us all. Hopefully making something memorable instead of another film we “just don’t talk about.”
