The Batman: Matt Reeves Casts John Turturro as Mobster Carmine Falcone

Matt Reeves is adding more names to his cast for The Batman at a steady clip. The director confirmed who will portray Gotham crime boss Carmine Falcone.

Reeves revealed on Twitter his choice for Falcone is Big Lebowski and Transformers franchise actor John Turturro. The update came with a GIF of Turturro as his infamous Lebowski character, flamboyant bowler and convicted sex offender Jesus “The Jesus” Quintana, saying his famous line: “You said it, man!”

Turturro is the latest casting and comes very shortly after the still fresh casting of Andy Serkis as Alfred and Colin Farrell as an out-of-the-box pick for The Penguin. Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman were announced before them.

Carmine Falcone became a staple for Batman adaptations after appearing in Batman Begins where he was played by Tom Wilkinson. Dominating Gotham’s mob scene, he wound up gassed by Scarecrow and thrown into Arkham.

Falcone later appeared on Fox’s Gotham, played by John Doman, as a Mafia Don having most of the city and the police force in his pocket. After warring with Sal Maroni, Oswald Cobblepot, and Jim Gordon to an extent, he retired from his life of crime.

His presence is a further hint that The Batman will be based on The Long Halloween. Falcone was the one who set events in motion when he tried to bribe Bruce Wayne and sent men to beat up Harvey Dent.

John Turturro has had a long career. He’s worked with everyone from Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers to Michael Bay and took up directing himself occasionally.

Turturro made a sequel to The Big Lebowski without the involvement of the Coens titled Going Places. It picks up with “The Jesus” years later when he joins up with new associates after a stay in prison.

Going Places was intended to play around the festival circuit but October came and went without much of an update from Turturro, who generated headlines months ago for saying the film “shows how stupid men are.”

He described Going Places to The Independent in June:

“It’s a bit of a racy movie. It shows how stupid men are. That’s what the movie is kinda about – the women are the stronger, more together characters. I had to tweak it a little bit but now I feel really good about it.”

Directed and written by Matt Reeves, The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, is set to go places; starting with production in 2020. It hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
