Box office tracking website, Box Office Pro, released its long-range box office forecast for the upcoming The Batman film from director Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Batman and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman.
Box Office Pro claims The Batman “is poised to join the club and reinvigorate the theatrical marketplace when it debuts just four weeks from now.”
They support their claim by noting “Batman is arguably one of the most valuable and reliable pop culture icons when it comes to the box office, evidenced by numerous blockbuster performances across multiple generations of moviegoers — from Tim Burton’s 1989 film to Christopher Nolan’s early 2000s trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.”
“Advance tracking, social activity, and trailer imprints for The Batman are the strongest of any release excluding Spider-Man: No Way Home since before the pandemic began. Preliminary metrics align closely with Captain Marvel, which scored the third highest March opening in history with $153.4 million three years ago,” they add.
Specifically, Box Office Pro predicts the film will earn between $135 and $185 million in its opening weekend on March 4th. They also predict the film will gross between $340 and $540 million in its entire domestic box office run.
If The Batman is anywhere near the upper end of their prediction it will gross more than Marvel Studios’ Eternals did in its entire domestic run. The-Numbers reports Eternals only earned $164.8 million at the domestic box office.
In fact, if The Batman hits the upper end of $185 million it would out gross Black Widow’s entire domestic run at the box office as well. That film earned $183.6 million at the domestic box office.
YouTuber OMB Reviews believes it is possible that the film could earn over a billion dollars based off Box Office Pro’s domestic projections.
The YouTuber explains, “If this film is able to reach up in numbers, is able to really build up even more hype. I think a lot of people are very hyped for this film. I know I see a lot of people in the comments section of the videos talk about how excited they are for this film.”
“I was even aske on a recent live show, ‘What do you think the next billion dollar film will be?’ And I looked at this film and I looked at what knowledge we had at the time and I said, ‘Hey, I don’t know necessarily if this is going to be that film. I think it could get to the $7-800 million range, but I don’t know necessarily if it’ll reach the billion dollar range.’ But this kind of changes things. Just a little bit. Again, these are long range projections and so this very well could change. ” he continued.
Later in the video, he notes that IMDb reports the film does not currently have a release in China and asks, “Does that mean that it can’t hit a billion dollars without China? Well, Joker is a clear example that that is not the case.”
“So, not only is this film set to make a lot of money. Not only is this film not releasing in China, not only is this film expected to make almost half a billion just in the domestic market alone… but it is also a movie that is PG-13, which means it’s going to be a lot more easily accessible even at a longer run time to more audiences whereas Joker was much more limited,” OMB Reviews added.
“Now, if this film’s reviews, especially from audiences, if the word of mouth for this film is positive, I can’t see how this film doesn’t make a billion dollars.”
He would reiterate, “I think that this film, if the word of mouth is strong, if the film actually delivers, if the film’s able to deliver on that run time, which I said with Matt Reeves behind it seems to be a likely chance, unless Warner Bros. has its hands all up involved in it — we know how Warner Bros. loves to do that, and when they do it leads to some pretty bad films.
“It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the long run. But if you had to ask my guess at this point in I would say, ‘Yeah, I think this film has a decent chance. I think this film definitely has a decent chance,” he asserted.
What do you make of these long-range predictions? How much do you think The Batman will earn at the box office?
