Tom Cruise shared a first look at the upcoming Top Gun sequel. But he also seemingly confirmed that production has begun on the project as he included with the poster, “#Day1.”

The poster shows Cruise’s Maverick in his flight gear looking out onto an airstrip at his iconic F-14A Tomcat with the words “Feel the need” written across it.

The Top Gun sequel will be called Top Gun: Maverick. Cruise will reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. It will be a modern day sequel with a story set in modern times and dealing with modern warfare. The movie will see fighter pilots struggle to stay relevant as they deal with new drone technology that is making their style of fighting obsolete. He will be joined by Val Kilmer who will reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Kilmer confirmed his role in the film back in a Facebook post from 2015, where he said, “I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say “yes” without reading the script…”

The film will be directed by Oblivion, TRON: Legacy, and Only the Brave director Joseph Kosinski. Cruise and Kosinski previously worked together on Oblivion. He will be joined by German composer Harold Flatermeyer who created the score for the original Top Gun.

Also returning for the sequel is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He will be joined by Skydance’s David Ellison and Tom Cruise.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the film will be written by Justin Marks who previously worked on Disney’s live-action Jungle Book movie. Marks has also worked on the television series Counterpart and he’s been working on screenplays for Shadow of the Colossus, Jungle Book 2, and an adaptation of Vertigo Comics’ FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics.

The film is expected to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
