Tomb Raider Reviews are In – Worse Than Anyone Imagined!
Tomb Raider reviews are finally coming in as it appears Warner Bros. has lifted the review embargo on the film. The reviews aren’t pretty.
On Rotten Tomatoes the movie currently stands at a 51% Tomatometer out of 56 total critic reviews. Here’s the Tomatometer consensus: “Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with an more grounded approach and a star who’s clearly more than up to the task — neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.”
The film fares worse on review aggregate site Metacritic which gives it a 49/100 from 26 critics.
Here’s a snapshot of what some of the reviewers are saying. We’ll start with the positives.
Inkoo Kang at Slate gives the film an 80/100: “An obligatory setup for a sequel slows down the final moments, but until then, Tomb Raider feels like a perfectly paced trio of espresso shots, with a shot of adrenaline to the heart as a chaser.”
Owen Gleiberman at Variety gives the film a 70/100: “The movie is full of vine-swinging, bow-and-arrow-shooting, ancient-spirit-meeting action, but most of it is staged on a convincing human scale, one that’s been expertly tailored to its star’s understated directness.”
It starts to go downhill from there.
Tim Robey at the Telegraph gives the film a 60/100: “More than the sets or spectacle, Vikander pulls you into her picture, as if we’ve signed up for a special edition of the game where Lara Croft has only one life to spare, one go to get it right. It’s not rocket science, just an elementary way to make us sit up and care.”
Vince Mancini at Uproxx gives the film a 50/100: The action set pieces are hit and miss, mostly not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, and if there’s one thing Tomb Raider is actually good at, it’s giving death more gravity than you usually see in these kinds of movies, where faceless henchmen are dispatched with nary a second thought. For the most part, though, Tomb Raider is content to be the kind of movie that reminds you of other movies without differentiating itself from them. ”
Now let’s get into some of the rotten reviews.
Rodrigo Perez at The Playlist gives Tomb Raider a 25/100: Unexceptionally directed by Roar Uthaug (Norwegian hit “The Wave“), Tomb Raider is superficial even for a mainstream tentpole, clumsily and unpersuasively put together and tests and breaks suspension of disbelief at every turn.
Jack Cole at Slant Magazine gives the film a 25/100: This isn’t an adaptation of a video game so much as an adaptation of a video game’s tutorial level.
Will these overall negative reviews effect whether or not you will go see Tomb Raider this weekend?
