Warner Bros. Sets Wonder Woman 2 Release Date!
Warner Bros. has made it official. Wonder Woman will return in her own stand-alone film on December 13, 2019 according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gal Gadot will return as Wonder Woman for the sequel and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is in ongoing negotiations to return to direct the sequel, but no official announcement has been made at this time.
Wonder Woman debuted on June 2, 2017 and starred Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta, Robin Wright as Antiope, and David Thewlis as the villain Ares. The film powered to a $103.1 million opening weekend. And the movie hasn’t lost that much steam. To date it has grossed more than $389 million at the domestic box office.
The Hollywood Reporter notes the film “is holding better than any superhero film in more than 15 years at the North American box office.” Box Office Mojo notes the film has brought in $390.6 million from the foreign box office bringing the total worldwide gross to $780.3 million. It’s the #3 top performing movie in the past year behind Rogue One and Beauty and the Beast.
Wonder Woman, Hippolyta, and Antiope will return in Warner Bros. upcoming Justice League film alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ezra Miller’s Flash, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. It’s highly rumored that Superman will also return, but Warner Bros. and DC are keeping their lips tightly sealed.
The Wonder Woman 2 film joins Justice League (November 17, 2017) and Aquaman (December 21, 2018) with actual release dates. However, Warner Bros. did reveal their upcoming movie slate at San Diego Comic Con this past weekend which included Shazam!, Flashpoint, The Batman, Batgirl, Justice League Dark, Green Lantern Corps, and Suicide Squad 2. There is also a Gotham City Sirens project in the works being headed by Suicide Squad director David Ayer.
