Wild Rumors Abound: Justice League Producer Disputes Earlier Report on Ben Affleck Continuing as Batman
The rumor mill is working over time today. This morning, a report from John Campea stated that Warner Bros. already has a replacement for Ben Affleck as Batman. But now Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice producer Charles Roven has added his own insight into the increasingly confusing story.
In an interview with CBR.com, Roven cast doubt on this morning’s revelations about Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. According to the Justice League producer, “I’m not a producer on that movie. Matt Reeves is working on that, but I do work with Ben, so I know that he’s certainly planning on starring in that film, but I don’t know what the script is.”
Roven actually casts doubt on his own opinion. Prefacing the statement by saying he is not a producer on that film. However, Charles Roven has been a producer on literally every film in the DC Cinematic Universe. From Man of Steel all the way to tomorrow’s Justice League. He’s been a key part of both the DC and Warner Bros. family for years, so it’s safe to say he knows just how much weight a statement of his can carry.
He’s saying that he believes Ben Affleck is still starring in The Batman because he has actually spoken to Ben Affleck.
And the Answer is…
Simply unclear. Why? Because there’s most likely a chance that Ben Affleck has yet to make his decision, and Warner Bros. are allowing him to choose for himself. It’s the only explanation for so many disparate rumors and opinions regarding his place in the Justice League. Ben has been the highlight of this Universe so far, outside of this past Summer’s Wonder Woman. Despite being one of the most controversial casting choices of all time he brought his A-game. Ben proved himself more than worthy in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Both audiences and critics had major problems with the film. One of the most important of which was the portrayal of Batman himself. But it wasn’t Affleck’s portrayal of that Batman that was polarizing, it was simply that Batman. Fans and audiences disagreed with his tactics and brutality in the film; no one disagreed that Ben Affleck gave an incredible performance as Bruce Wayne.
There is, however, one more story related to Ben that has more significance than most think.
Affleck recently issued an apology for a “groping” incident that took place in 2003. He was also very close with Harvey Weinstein, who is the eroded central pillar of this sexual conduct structure in Hollywood. Now that the structure is collapsing, many stories will continue to come out. There may yet be a story about Ben Affleck that Warner Bros. is waiting to surface.
Or, the single greatest part of the DC Cinematic Universe is taking some time to decide whether or not he wants to star in The Batman when he’s almost 50-years-old. Only time will tell.
