Zoe Kravitz: Catwoman “Represents Really Strong Femininity” She Is “Excited to Dive Into”
Zoe Kravitz, who plays the coveted dual role of Selina Kyle and Catwoman, began work on The Batman this month in England.
Kravitz admitted to Variety at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday she wasn’t exactly into comics but likes the feminine power Catwoman represents.

“I think Catwoman, Selina Kyle represents really strong femininity, and I’m excited to dive into that,” said Kravitz.
Catwoman’s Strength
She continued and said “femininity represents power,” distinguishing “masculine power” from “feminine power.” The actress added the distinction is a big part of the dynamic between Bat and Cat:
“I think femininity represents power, and I think it’s a different kind of power than masculine power. That’s something that’s really interesting about Batman and Catwoman.”
Kravitz classified Catwoman’s power as “slightly more complicated, and softer” but still “very dangerous”:
“I think Batman represents a very kind of masculine power, and Catwoman represents very feminine power — slightly more complicated, and softer, too. I like the idea that you can be soft, you can be gentle and still be very powerful and still be very dangerous.”

Since she might not draw a lot from comics for her performance, Kravitz looked elsewhere to Michelle Pfeiffer’s memorable and “iconic” loose-cannon depiction of Catwoman in Batman Returns:
“I think Catwoman is an iconic character. I was never into a lot of comic books, but that world was always really intriguing to me. And then of course Michelle Pfeiffer — her performance has always been super inspiring to me. It just felt iconic.”

Kravitz mentioned to Ellen DeGeneres how nervous she was meeting Pfeiffer at the Golden Globes. “I was bowing to the queen,” she admitted. “I’m a little nervous to be in her presence now.”
Kravitz Takes Inspiration From Pfeiffer
Michelle Pfeiffer, though she endorsed Elle Fanning months ago, congratulated Zoe Kravitz when she won the part of Catwoman, beating out Joker’s Zazie Beetz, Eiza Gonzalez who will be in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong, and Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander.

It’s interesting Kravitz would look to Pfeiffer and Batman Returns for inspiration. The Batman, which will feature Catwoman and Penguin among its rogues, mirrors the Tim Burton film in some ways.
IndieWire calls The Batman “the tenth film in the DC Extended Universe” though the film is a standalone reboot that, like Joker, isn’t expected to tie into any continuity – as fluid and mutable as it may be.
Zoe Kravitz, meanwhile, has her new Hulu series, High Fidelity, itself a reboot, dropping next month. It’s based on a 2000 romantic comedy starring John Cusack and her mother, Lisa Bonet, adapted from a Nick Hornby novel.
The “masculine power” of The Batman swoops into theaters June 25th, 2021.
