ABC Passes on Female-Centric Marvel Superhero Show

ABC has reportedly passed on bringing a female-centric Marvel superhero show from Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg to pilot.

The show was teased back in September of 2018 and was supposed to feature a number of Marvel’s lesser-known female characters. There was speculation it could have featured the A-Force, Lady Liberators, or the Fearless Defenders. It would have been executive produced by Heinberg and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

Deadline reports it’s “unclear whether the untitled hourlong drama from Heinberg, Marvel Television and ABC Studios, will be redeveloped.”

Details about the show are scarce. Heinberg told Deadline:

“I hope there is more than we are doing together.”

A number of Marvel Television shows have been cancelled over the past year. FX’s [easyazon_link identifier=”B01LTIABIC” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Legion[/easyazon_link], which was an X-Men based series, was just recently cancelled. A number of Marvel TV’s Netflix series have gotten the ax including Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.

However, ABC renewed [easyazon_link identifier=”B07G887P77″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[/easyazon_link] for a seventh season before the sixth season even premiered. Both Season 6 and Season 7 are only expected to run for 13 episodes. The fifth season had 22 episodes.

Marvel TV also has Cloak & Dagger on Freeform as well as Runaways on Hulu. Jessica Jones will also debut a third season on Netflix, and there hasn’t been an update on whether Punisher will get renewed for a third season.

While ABC might have passed on this female-centric Marvel superhero drama, it’s possible it could find a home elsewhere. ABC originally developed Jessica Jones before it was moved to Netflix. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities to see this show get developed for Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+. Disney CEO Bob Iger already confirmed the platform is developing a Marvel show focused on Loki with actor Tom Hiddleston attached.

Iger told Barron’s in January that the initial goal for the streaming platform is to “make more great stuff.”

“The most important thing for [Disney] executives is that they create great content for this platform. And I will know whether they have. Instead of setting numerical targets, you set different kind of targets. … Initially it needs to be—I need everyone to step up and make more great stuff.”

He went on to stress how important the Fox acquisition was in regards to Disney+ specifically pointing out the plethora of IP Fox had:

“We needed a few things, and one of them, really the most important, was intellectual property. When we looked at the Fox assets and brands—National Geographic, FX, Searchlight, the movie Avatar, the Marvel properties that they licensed, I could go on, The Simpsons—they had a lot that we could use to feed the beast that we’re taking to the market.”

Do you think this female-centric Marvel superhero show could show up on Disney+ or do you think it might be put permanently on ice?
