Daredevil Season 3 Showrunner Compares Wilson Fisk to Donald Trump
Daredevil Season 3 showrunner Erik Oleson coyly compared Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk to President Donald Trump while discussing the villain’s role in the upcoming season.
In an interview with Polygon, Oleson would insinuate that Fisk is like Donald Trump by stating Fisk would “attack or encourage attacks on the press or try to undermine freedom of speech in their quest for power. I very much saw Wilson Fisk in that vein … He is very much operating on par with the techniques of Vladimir Putin or some other villains who may or may not be living in our country right now.”
Oleson would also add details about Fisk stating he’s “a narcissistic tyrant who uses people’s fears to keep them divided and conquered.”
Erik Oleson then goes into detail about Fisk and how he used his father’s background in the intelligence community to make him as sinister as he could:
“In real life, my father worked in the intelligence community and I grew up as the son of a guy who ran operations for the Defense Intelligence Agency and later CIA. I wanted to give Wilson Fisk the tools of a real life spymaster, someone who understood the techniques of psychological manipulation, of informational warfare, of recruitment, of operational thinking. I wanted to show the way that Wilson Fisk would destabilize a target that he is seeking to recruit and then bring that character to the dark side without them ever fully realizing the layers of manipulation that he undertook to make those events happen. That’s something he does to a number of characters this season.”
He would reaffirm the “narcissistic tyrant” line when revealing that Bullseye’s origin for the show and how he is actually one of Kingpin’s victims:
“We were able to tell an origin story for how an FBI sharpshooter, who might otherwise be a good person and a productive member of society, is twisted into his own worst self by somebody who brings out the worst in people.”
He adds:
“A narcissistic tyrant, a would-be-dictator who manages to convince everybody around him to be their worst selves and draws them into darkness. We were able to tell the story of a person who might have ended up a good guy if he had not come under the sway of Wilson Fisk.”
Finally, Oleson states:
“[Fisk] is someone who is attacking the truth, and doesn’t let the truth hold him back from playing the good guy to the world. And for Matt, the hero of the show, it’s extremely frustrating that the public doesn’t seem cognizant of the true carcinogenic nature of Fisk.”
Well, I guess we now know how Oleson feels about President Donald Trump.
I’m not really sure why Oleson goes out of his way to try to make people not want to watch his show. I guess scoring social points might be better than actually having people enjoy your show.
Everything he described about Wilson Fisk seems torn straight from the comic books. There was no reason to try and compare him to Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin or any other political figure. This is a superhero story starring one of Marvel’s best villains, who also had a huge impression on fans throughout Season 1 as well as Season 2 with the Punisher.
The only thing Oleson has done is make people not want to watch Daredevil Season 3. I was actually really looking forward to the third season, but now I’m extremely hesitant because Oleson has gone out of his way to politicize the show. If he’s willing to make this comparison, how much more of the show will include overt political statements? Will the show actually try to talk down to viewers and moralize to them? These are questions that are now running through my head that weren’t before Oleson politicized the show.
What do you make of Oleson’s comments? Will you still be checking out Daredevil Season 3?
