Elizabeth Olsen: Disney+ WandaVision Show Set in 1950s

At the World Premiere for Avengers: Endgame, Elizabeth Olsen revealed the teaser for WandaVision showed a picture of Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision in clothes from the 50s.

Olsen spoke with Variety at the premiere where she told them:

“There’s quite a few other comic books that we’re pulling from and it’s going to be Wanda and the Vision, and I think at the Disney+ launch chat, they showed a photo of us in the ’50s.”

Variety is reporting this bit of information confirms the show is set in the 1950s. However, rumors about the Loki show starring Tom Hiddleston have revealed that the show might take place in different periods of time. It’s possible WandaVision might as well.

Olsen also revealed the entire series will be six hours long.

“Paul [Bettany] and I are really excited. They have a great group of writers. I think it’s going to be a total of six hours.”

She would also confirm the show will begin shooting in the fall.

The show will be written, produced, and showrun by Jac Schaeffer, who wrote the screenplay for Captain Marvel.

Given Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch was introduced in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and her powers were the results of experiments with the Scepter that house the Mind Stone, it’s more than likely that Scarlet Witch might use her powers to either travel back in time or create a new reality.

Olsen had previously revealed in an interview with Metro UK last April while promoting Avengers: Infinity War that she was interested in adapting the House of M storyline.

“I would love to [do a standalone], and I would love it to be House of M, which is a comic book series of The Vision and Scarlet Witch having a make-believe family.

She [Wanda] believes she has twin children- she alters her own reality to believe that, but really she has a miscarriage and Vision goes along with it. Then they [Vision and her family] have to tell her that she was make-believing the entire time, and she has a very traumatic experience and screams, and kills all the mutants – but that’s an X-Men story, so we’d have to adjust the ending.”

She would also indicate in an interview with Digital Spy that Paul Bettany was on board with the idea.

“Paul Bettany and I joke about how much we’d like to do a House of M spin-off. And a real indie version of it.”

Given that Disney now has access to the X-Men and their story lines, it’s quite possible the Disney+ show will mine the iconic House of M storyline in WandaVision.

And if they do mine the House of M storyline, it’s possible the show could introduce Magneto to the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite Kevin Feige said it would be a long time before the characters were introduced.

Olsen indicated she would want Magneto in a House of M adaptation.

“I don’t think so because we’ve gone so far to create a non-X-Men universe backstory for my character. Now, it’s the reason that we’re connected to the Vision. The Stone in his head is the Stone that gave me my powers so we’ve really just kind of leaned into the Stones, I feel like. So, I don’t think so, but if they’re like a Michael Fassbender being my daddy crossover, I would say, ‘Yes, please.’ I love Michael Fassbender.”

WandaVision joins The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and Loki on Disney+. There are also rumored shows centered on Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

What do you make about this update on WandaVision? Do you think this might tease a larger House of M storyline? Are you looking forward to WandaVision?
