CBS has announced three of the cast members who will go where no man has gone before in their upcoming television series Star Trek Discovery.
For months the rumor mill has been throwing out many names, for example Angela Basset was rumored to take a staring role. But that was quickly dismissed by the actress in early May. But now we have confirmed names and roles for the next installment in the sci-fi juggernaut franchise.
The Starship Shenshou will be lead by Captain Georgiou who will be played by Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh is best known for her acclaimed role in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
Joining Yeoh will be Doug Jones. Jones is best known for his portrayal as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy franchise. He also played Fauno in Pan’s Labyrinth as well as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy franchise. Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Science Officer. According to CBS, Jones will be a member of a brand new alien race in the Star Trek Universe.
Finally, the third official casting announcement has Anthony Rapp taking on the role of Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. Rapp is known for his roles in Dazed and Confused, Road Trip, and A Beautiful Mind. But his mark has been made heavily on the stage with such productions as Broadway’s Rent.

CBS has been working very hard to keep details of the story tight lipped. But what is known is that the series will be set ten years before Star Trek The Original Series. Having a series that close to Captian Kirk’s five-year mission of exploration may allow them to explore themes and stories that were hinted during the original series’s run. Star Trek: Discovery premieres in 2017 on the CBS Television Network, with the premiere and all subsequent episodes available exclusively on CBS All Access.
