The CW has released a first look at actress Ruby Rose in her Batwoman costume.
Take a look:
According to The Hollywood Reporter the costume was designed by Colleen Atwood, who also designed the suits for Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.
Rose was cast as Batwoman back in the beginning of August, where not only did The CW reveal that Rose would debut as Batwoman during the December crossover event for the Arrowverse, but she would also be getting her very own series.
Batwoman’s character for the series was described as a woman “armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind.” She’s an “out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet — in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
However, her casting was mired in controversy. She quit Twitter after a number of people accused her of not completely fitting the archetype of Batwoman found in recent comics. While Rose is a lesbian as is Batwoman, a number of people took issue with the fact that Rose is not Jewish. However, the fact that she wasn’t Jewish wasn’t the only way people went after Rose. They decided to target her as being a token lesbian.
Arrowverse chief Greg Berlanti defended Rose’s casting stating, “[Ruby] is terrific in the role, and we’re excited for people to see the story.” One thing is clear if you’ve seen her in the John Wick franchise you know she has the chops to throw down.
