Game Of Thrones Writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Reveal Plans for Finale: “In an Undisclosed Location…Opening Various Bottles”
Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently revealed their plans for the Game of Thrones Season 8 finale.
The two writers spoke to Entertainment Weekly where they detailed they planned on “opening various bottles.”
Weiss revealed, “We’ll [be] in an undisclosed location, turning off our phones and opening various bottles.”
And there might be good reason for the two writers to go into hiding and begin drinking. In fact, Weiss was very open stating that Season 8 “could end up being a complete mess.”
But that doesn’t mean the two are thinking the finale will be a dud. Weiss details:
“We want people to love it. It matters a lot to us. We’ve spent 11 years doing this. We also know no matter what we do, even if it’s the optimal version, that a certain number of people will hate the best of all possible versions. There is no version where everybody says, “I have to admit, I agree with every other person on the planet that this is the perfect way to do this” — that’s an impossible reality that doesn’t exist. You hope you’re doing the best job you can, that this version works better than any other version, but you know somebody is not going to like it. I’ve been that person with other things, where people are loving something and I’m going, “Yeah, that’s okay. I was hoping for more.”
Benioff does add, ” From the beginning, we’ve talked about how the show would end. A good story isn’t a good story if you have a bad ending. Of course we worry.”
There might be a big reason to be worrying. Season 8 has not been well received by fans with an audience score of 41% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. In fact, Season 8 has received a steadily declining Tomatometer score for each episode. Episode 1 received a 92%. It would drop to 88% with Episode 2. Episode 3 would receive a 75%. Episode 4 plunged to 57%, and Episode 5 currently sits at 47%. It’s not a good trend and could indicate that Benioff and Weiss’s Game of Thrones finale might not be loved by people.
While the trend for the finale doesn’t look good for Benioff and Weiss. There is a ray of hope for fans of the franchise.
The two would elaborate that their finale of Game of Thrones will more than likely be different from George R.R. Martin’s conclusion in the novels, if he ever gets around to finishing them.”
Benioff details that while talking with Martin they indicated they don’t plan on revealing what the differences between the show and book will be. He states, “When those books come out people can experience them fresh.”
Weiss added, “It’s kind of nice for him because — obviously through necessity we’ve pulled out ahead — the show has become so different [in recent seasons] that people will have no way knowing from watching what will or won’t appear in the books. And honestly, neither do we.”
Benioff confirms, “We don’t. And George discovers a lot of stuff while he’s writing. I don’t think that final book is written in stone yet — it’s not written on paper yet. As George says, he’s a gardener and he’s waiting to see how those seeds blossom.”
What do you make of David Benioff and Dan Weiss’ plans for the finale of Game of Thrones? Do you think it is a good plan?
