George R.R. Martin Reveals Title for HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel Series
Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin revealed the title for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series shortly after news broke that Naomi Watts was the first actress cast.
The series will be titled The Long Night and is co-created by Jane Goldman and Martin. Goldman will act as showrunner for the series. She also wrote the teleplay based of Martin’s story.
According to Variety, the series will take place thousands of years before Game of Thrones. It will chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes to an extremely dark period. The story will allegedly deal with Westeros’ ancient history including the true origin of the white walkers. It will also delve into the Starks of legend as well as the mysteries of the East.
Martin has already debunked a number of theories regarding what the show will be about including the involvement of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unlikely. He’s also confirmed it will not involve Robert’s Rebellion and none of the current main cast of Game of Thrones will appear in the series.
There isn’t much information on Naomi Watts’ characters aside from the fact that she’s “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” That’s a description that could apply to numerous characters. While Watts character is the first announced, she won’t be the last. Martin indicates that Goldman is currently in London working on casting for the show.
Martin also teased there are a number of other Game of Thrones projects in the works writing, “Meanwhile, there are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development.  I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. ” He did hint that information regarding these prequels could be revealed in his upcoming book [easyazon_link identifier=”152479628X” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Fire & Blood[/easyazon_link] which is due out on November 20, 2018.
Fire & Blood
Fire & Blood takes place centuries before A Game of Thrones and focuses on House Targaryen, the sole surviving family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. The book will chronicle their story beginning with Aegon the Conqueror, the man who built the Iron Throne. It will chronicle Targaryen history throughout the generations leading all the way to the civil war that almost tore their family dynasty apart.
The book will reveal what happened at the Dance of the Dragons, why it was deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom, what were Maegot the Cruel’s worst crimes, and what was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies. The book will be told from the perspective of a learned maester of the Citadel and will feature over 80 black-and-white illustrations by Doug Wheatley. The book will be the first of two volumes chronicling the history of the Targaryens.
