The Mandalorian Executive Producer Jon Favreau recently provided more details on the recently announced The Book of Boba Fett and its relationship with The Mandalorian.
The Book of Boba Fett was announced following an end credit scene for The Mandalorian Season 2 that showed Boba Fett and Fennec Shand retaking Jabba the Hutt’s old palace from Bib Fortuna.
That announcement stated that the show would arrive December 2021. There was fan speculation that The Book of Boba Fett might actually be Season 3 of The Mandalorian given Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed at the Disney Investor Day 2020 that the next chapter of The Mandalorian would debut on Disney+ Christmas of 2021.
A rumor from LRM Online indicated that fan speculation was simply that speculation and The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett were two separate shows. They went on to claim that The Mandalorian Season 3 might not debut until 2022.
They reported, “Our source says the plan, as I suspected, is to film The Book of Boba Fett and then straight into The Mandalorian Season 3. This was always part of the plan.”
Following this rumor Lucasfilm concept artist Paul Bateman claimed that The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett are indeed separate shows.
He wrote, “Just to absolutely clear things up – Season 3 of The Mandalorian and The Book of You Know Who are two different shows. You’re getting both. Trust me on this one.”
However, he would follow that tweet up making it clear he does not represent Lucasfilm, “Just to make sure folks get the big picture – until clarity comes from the horses mouth, (hopefully soon), I don’t officially represent Lucasfilm when it comes to this kind of thing.”
That clarity would come in the form of Jon Favreau during an appearance on Good Morning America.

Favreau stated, “At the end of the show Boba Fett came out and it said The Book of Boba Fett coming December of 2021 and that wasn’t part of the big Disney announcement. But here’s the logo.”
He continued, “We wanted to hold this back because we didn’t want to spoil the surprise during the big Disney announcement of all the shows when Kathleen Kennedy was up there. And so they let me keep this one a secret.”
Favreau then clarified the relationship between The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian. He explained, “So this is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is that the next show coming up, Kathy said the next chapter, and that is going to be The Book of Boba Fett.”
Favreau added, “And then we go into production right after that on Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Back with the main character that we all have known and love. That is pretty soon following that. So, we are working on that pre-production now while we are in production on Boba Fett.”
The official Star Wars Twitter account would provide some more details about the show.
They claim “The Book of Boba Fett, a new Original Series, starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen and executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez, set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, is coming to Disney+ Dec. 2021.”
