Did A Major ‘Daredevil’ Season 3 Villain Just Get Revealed?
*Spoilers From The Defenders Below*
At the end of Marvel’s The Defenders Matt Murdock was recovering from some pretty serious injuries at a convent. One would assume that having a building fall on top of you would do quite a bit of damage.
It’s not known how he found himself at the convent surrounded by nuns, but that in itself may have hinted at a major story arc for Daredevil Season 3. Since Matt is alive, one can assume Elektra likely made it out of the rubble as well. While Elektra may appear in Season 3, it’s another Marvel villain who got our attention.
On The Hashtag Show, a breakdown of a character description for Daredevil Season 3 gave us a pretty clear description of an upcoming series regular villain.
28-35, 5’9-6’1, Open ethnicity. An athletic but socially awkward FBI Agent, needs structure and rules to suppress the darkness inside himself. Athletic with medium build, responsible and resourceful, hair trigger temper. SERIES REGULAR
This listing led some to reason the villain Sin-Eater will show up. In the comics, Sin-Eater is named Stanley Carter. He was originally an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. before joining the New York Police Department. While at S.H.I.E.L.D. he volunteered for an experimental drug. The drug gives him increased strength and stamina. There’s just one problem, the drug drives him insane.
What really pushes Stanley Carter over the edge is the murder of his partner. The side-effects of the drugs combined with his depression push him over the edge. Add on to this his warped sense of religion and Stanley Carter becomes the Sin-Eater, a man who believes it is goal to eradicate “sin” from a deeply corrupt society.
If Marvel decides to go in that direction, it could leave open possibilities of the involvement of S.H.I.E.L.D. within the Netflix/Marvel Partnership of television series. However, given the description notes he will be a FBI agent, they will probably continue to keep the MCU at arms length. It’s more than likely he will have a similar story to Jessica Jones’ Nuke and his experimentation might also come from the mysterious IGH organization which supplied Nuke with his pills.
However, if they do decide to tie in more directly with the MCU, experimentation on S.H.I.E.LD. agents is nothing new in the MCU. Discovering how Agent Coulson is revived is one of the main mysteries of Season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
If Netflix and Marvel do choose to use Sin-Eater, he would make a great foil for Daredevil given Matt Murdock’s dedication to his Catholic faith and Stanley Carter’s warped sense of religion that drives him to remove sin. If they choose to go with a Born Again theme it would suit the season very well!
