Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil Gets Religious in New Kingpin Teaser!
Netflix and Marvel ramped up their promotion of Marvel’s Daredevil by putting a religious spin on their marketing. They began sharing short clips and referencing Bible verses.
This first started earlier this month where they released a teaser clip of the new season alongside a Bible verse from the Book of Deuteronomy.

Here is what the verse says, “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, as well as death and disaster.” This screams major foreshadowing for the upcoming third season, and also alludes to Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s iconic[easyazon_link identifier=”0785134816″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Born Again[/easyazon_link] story line. The story sees Daredevil at the top of his game, brought low and even to the brink of death as Kingpin discovers his real identity. Daredevil must be born anew to save New York City and defeat Kingpin.
The Book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book in the Torah for Jews and Old Testament for Christians. It consists of 30 chapters and holds three speeches from the prophet Moses to the Israelites.
These laws were given to the Israelites right before they entered the promised land and conquered Canaan. The fact they used the verse from the third lecture might be another hint on the tone of season three. It provides that with repentance there can be the comfort of God.
The teaser trailer wouldn’t be the only time they referenced the Bible. In a response to a fan, they also cite Romans 13: 11. The verse reads, “And do this because we know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers.”

It’s obviously a reference to the fact that the teaser gave us the actual release date for Daredevil Season 3.
This morning they were back at it as they released a clip of Vincent D’Onofrio donning the iconic white Kingpin suit that was teased in the previous trailer. The teaser was accompanied by Daniel 9:5.

This verse states, “We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly, we have betrayed your commandments and rulings and turned away from them.”
The combination of both Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, and this verse, it’s telling to me that both characters must know what they have done is wrong. In their own way, they turned their backs on beliefs and values that they held high. From Matt’s perspective his struggle with his Roman Catholic faith and the commitment to not kill. For Fisk, his love of Hell’ s Kitchen and his thirst for power, and doing anything even murdering to obtain it.
Fans were quick to pick up on what was going on and saw that the carefully selected verses were hinting at some great upheaval this season. A number of them believe Daredevil might have committed some great crime.
Multiple fans began asking questions and they each got their own Bible verse in response.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reads, “Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully.” An obvious tease to be patient for you will find out when Daredevil Season 3 release.
Colossians 1:11
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Colossians 1:11 reads, “For everything, there is an appointed time, and an appropriate time for every activity on earth.” Once again, be patient the trailer is coming.
Ezekiel 25:17
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Ezekiel 25:17 reads, “I will exact great vengeance upon them with angry rebukes. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I exact my vengeance upon them.” This one is a little cryptic as it could apply to either Fisk or Daredevil. We know Fisk wants revenge for Murdock throwing him in prison, but Daredevil might want his own vengeance after seeing what Fisk might be doing to the city when he awakes from his coma.
Acts 2:20
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Acts 2:20 reads, “The sun will be changed to darknessand the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.” This definitely sounds like there is going to be plenty of action and violence this season. This is no surprise given the previous two seasons.
Romans 12:12
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Romans 12:12 reads, “Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.” Another one to tell you to be patient, it’s coming.
Lamentations 3:1-2
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Lamentations 3: 1-2 reads, “I am the one who has seen the afflictions that come from the rod of the Lord’s anger. He has led me into darkness, shutting out all light.” This one makes it seem that God is angry with Daredevil for something he has done. And as a punishment he has taken him to a dark place, where he cannot see the light.
Colossians 3:15
— Daredevil (@Daredevil) September 26, 2018
Colossians 3:15 reads, “Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful.” Just some friendly advice!
This left many fans making comments about how they were going to read their Bibles to figure out what the Daredevil twitter account was saying. Some of the responses were funny.

Others, of course, noted the dark tone of not only the trailer, but a number of the Bible verses that hinted at what is to come in Daredevil Season 3.

It’s pretty awesome that the Daredevil Twitter account has embraced an integral part of Matt’s character, his Catholic faith, in responding to fans and sparking a number of theories, and creating a ton of anticipation for the third season.
Daredevil Season 3 comes to Netflix on October 19, 2018.
What do you think? Has this been a great way of teasing fans? Do you like the inclusion of the Bible in promoting Daredevil Season 3?
