New Details And Launch Date For NBC/Universal’s Peacock Streaming Service
It appears that the rumored April 2020 launch date for NBC/Universal’s Peacock streaming service has been changed. Now, the official launch date for Peacock will now be July 15, 2020.
We also got some new details about the service, as the Verge reports that the streaming service will launch with three different pricing tiers.
Three Tiers Available for Peacock Streaming
Peacock will be available in three tiers: a free option (Peacock Free) that comes with limited programming, an ad-supported complete version that is free to existing Comcast customers ($5 monthly for non-Comcast customers), and a $10 per month premium tier with no ads (Peacock premium).
The free version of Peacock will have 7,500 hours of programming, including next-day access to current seasons of first-year NBC shows.
Universal movies, and content such as SNL, a vault, and the family movie night will also be included.
The middle and premium tiers will include live sports and early access to late-night shows.
Peacock Premium will include non-televised Premier League soccer games beginning in August.
Over 20 million households use Comcast’s paid TV services. Peacock will be a free service that gives them a streaming option for some of NBC/Universal’s most iconic shows.
Comcast and Cox cable subscribers will get free access to Peacock Premium with ads, or they can pay $5 per month for the ad-free version.
Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers will get access to Peacock Premium on April 15th.
Steve Burke, chairman of NBC/Universal, had this to say about Peacock:
“This is a very exciting time for our company, as we chart the future of entertainment. We have one of the most enviable collections of media brands and the strongest ad sales track record in the business. Capitalizing on these key strengths, we are taking a unique approach to streaming that brings value to customers, advertisers and shareholders.”
Peacock should start out strong, having the summer Olympics on its service.
Full Library Of Shows To Be Available
However, in the long term, having the full NBC/Universal library will be what customers enjoy the most.
Favorites like Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica and hits like The Office (note: The Office will be available in 2021) will make viewers happy.
There will be some great launch exclusives for Peacock, including new versions of popular shows like Battlestar Galactica (from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail), Saved by the Bell, and Punky Brewster.
NBC/Universal also holds the rights to mega movie franchises like Harry Potter, so the movie side of the service will have plenty of content, along with exclusive movies made just for the streaming platform.
Peacock offers a nice middle ground between a streaming service and cable. It’ll be interesting to see just how its model does in the streaming market.
