Star Trek Discovery’s Timeline Officially Announced!
As of today, we have official word on which timeline Star Trek: Discovery will be set in.
Rumors have flown around trying to figuring out which universe the show would be based in. One of the biggest was that it would take place in the Kelvin timeline or the movie universe created by J.J. Abrams. Most of that speculation came from fans noticing the slicker more high tech gadgets and technology.
During CBS’s All Access Television Critics Association presentation, Akiva Goldsman, the executive producer, laid the rumors to rest by confirming that Star Trek: Discovery is in the Alpha Timeline. It will take place in the same universe as Star Trek: The Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and so on.
For many fans, this news comes as a welcome relief since the J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Universe is one of contention among the fan base. However, it makes sense Star Trek: Discovery would look sleeker given the massive improvement in real technology with CGI, sound effects, and improved studios since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005.
What is known is Star Trek: Discovery is set ten years prior to the events of Kirk’s Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series.
Goldsman also spoke about the novels related to that time period in the Alpha timeline. He stated that though they are paying attention to them, they don’t share the same continuity as Star Trek: Discovery.
He said:
We are considering the novels not to be canon, but we are aware of them. It is its own standalone story with its own characters and its own unique vision of Trek.
The focus of the series according to CBS is the USS Discovery’s adventures as they set out to discover new worlds and life across the galaxy. This isn’t too different from what other Star Trek shows have followed. It’s a familiar formula that has worked in the past.
This time period has only been mentioned a few times in different Star Trek shows. It will be fun what they do with so much wiggle run in relation to a little explored time in Star Trek history.
The cast of Star Trek: Discovery stars Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, among many others. The series was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres Sept. 24, 2017 on CBS All Access in the United States and Netflix around the globe.
