Battlestar Galactica actress Tricia Helfer recently weighed in on Sam Esmail’s upcoming Battlestar Galactica series.
Helfer is best known for her role as Cylon model “Number Six” in Ronald D. Moore’s reimagined series that ran from 2003-2008.
In a recent interview with Collider about Battlestar Galactica she reacted to the news about the new series.
Asked what her thoughts were on the new Battlestar Galactica series, she explained:
“When this one came along with Sam (Esmail), who’s brilliant, right? It did feel a little like a punch to the gut.”
She went on:
“You kind of went, oh this is serious. He’s going to do a good rendition of it, whatever, and we’re not involved. So it did kind of feel like ugh, too soon.”
The actress then revealed that there was a text chain among the 2000’s BSG cast, and that many of them were caught off guard by the news.
Helfer theorized that since Moore’s Battlestar Galactica is still airing on places such as Netflix and Amazon Prime video, as well as being syndicated on different networks, it feels very much alive.
“It’s only expanding. I come across people who watched it (BSG) with their parents as a teenager, and now it’s like, I’m showing it to my kids, or there’s people who never saw it originally and they’re seeing it for the very first time, so that’s what feels weird about it.”

She also said that in a 2018 episode of her Battlestar Galacticast podcast, Ron Moore himself had stated he didn’t want to see his BSG rebooted, that the vision was complete as a 5 year run.
“From the beginning, he (Ron Moore) said he saw it as a 5 year run and that’s what we did. He said I feel like I did that world and I loved it, and now he’s moved on to other things.”
After referencing Moore’s other recent projects, the actress would continue:
“Right from his mouth he said no. So we cut to a year later, and we hear this news in the press that Sam (Esmail) talked to Ron, and they talked it over, and Ron gave him his blessing. Who am I to poo – poo it?”
When asked later in the interview about making an appearance on the new series, Helfer likened it to when the late Richard Hatch was approached about a role in Moore’s reimagined BSG.
She recounted how the original Battlestar Galactica series actor was adamant on continuing the original vision of Galactica, and after meeting with Ron Moore, had a change of heart.
Hatch, who played Apollo in TOS Galactica, would go on to shine in the role of politician Tom Zarek in the reimagined series.
