Game Of Thrones Actress Maisie Williams Felt “Horrible” and “Ashamed” Wearing “Manly” Costumes

Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams revealed she felt “horrible” and “ashamed” due to some of the costumes she was required to wear when playing Arya Stark.

Williams spoke with Vogue about how she felt while attending a fashion show in Paris. She specifically highlighted the conflict between developing as a woman while playing a young girl on the HBO show.

She started off highlighting the benefits of being able to play younger as a young actress.

“Well, I think when you are a young actress it’s really exciting and you like you really want to look grown up. I was really conscious not to do that at the beginning of my career because you know even though I was like 16, 18, I was still looking 12, 14. So that’s really powerful when you’re an actor and playing younger is like one of your most valuable things.”

Williams was 12 when she first took on the role of Arya Stark. And she details that as she matured, Arya’s character didn’t keep up with her own body. In fact, Arya was actively trying to hide her identity from the Lannisters.

“A couple of seasons in the middle maybe around Season 2 or 3, my body started to mature and I started to like become a woman, but Arya was still very much like trying to be disguised as a boy.”

Williams then talks about how the “manly” costumes made her feel as she came of age as a woman.

“I had really short hair and they’d constantly covered me in dirt and shade my nose so it looked really broad and I looked really manly. And they’d also put this strap across my chest to flatten any growth that had started. And like, I don’t know, that just felt horrible. It felt like six months of the year, and I felt kind of a bit ashamed for a while.”

However, the actress is adopting a new sense of style that allows her to show off her femininity.

Williams explains:

“So you know we have this new phase of my style. Like it is nice to look more feminine, and like have a real waistline and just like know embrace the body that I have.”

She would even show off a photo of herself from a recent red carpet appearance saying, “See I have a female body. How exciting!”

As you can see from her Instagram post, Maisie Williams is wasting no time playing catch up. In the slideshow below you can see her showing off her femininity.
