Ricky Gervais Blasts Superhero Actors: “Have We Got an Award for Most Ripped Junkie?”
Sunday’s Golden Globe awards are still being talked about, due in large part to its host, Ricky Gervais.
In the course of his hosting duties, the comedian took aim at Hollywood, lambasting everything wrong with the industry.
Nothing was safe, including the superhero film genre.
Gervais said that all the best actors have gone to networks like Netflix and HBO.
He then added:
“Hollywood movies now do fantasy-adventure nonsense.” “They’re wearing masks and capes, and really tight costumes,” he continued: “Their job isn’t acting anymore. It’s going to the gym twice a day and taking steroids! Have we got an award for most-ripped junkie?”
Ricky would then go on to reference and concur with Martin Scorsese’s recent sentiment that the superhero genre is not real cinema, while poking fun at Scorsese’s height.
Other major highlights from the monologue included Gervais scolding Hollywood for their rampant political grandstanding instead of entertaining.
“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.
So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and f**k off, OK? It’s already three hours long.”
Since Sunday’s monologue, Gervais has received a lot of praise and support. However, the comedian has also faced some backlash.
On Monday, Ricky answered back with this tweet:
How the fuck can teasing huge corporations, and the richest, most privileged people in the world be considered right wing? 😂 #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/rfXdGrZ41j

Ricky would also address the media who attacked him for the monologue describing them as “morons.”
I always knew that there were morons in the world that took jokes seriously, but I’m surprised that some journalists do. Surely, understanding stuff is pretty fundamental to their job, isn’t it? Just makes it funnier though, I guess😇

The best truths sometimes come out in comedy. Ricky Gervais may be one of the conduits to make an industry take a hard look in the mirror.
The comedian summed things up perfectly with this mic drop of a Tweet today, where he stated, “Just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re right.”
1. Simply pointing out whether someone is left or right wing isn’t winning the argument.
2. If a joke is good enough, it can be enjoyed by anyone.
3. It’s not all about you.
4. Just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re right.— Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) January 8, 2020
