Walter Simonson Makes a Young Fan’s Dreams Come True
Legendary Marvel writer and artist Walter Simonson, best known for his work on Thor in the 80s as well as his Ragnarok series at IDW, made a young fan’s day during this year’s New York Comic Con.
A young fan was trying to watch Walter sketch, but due to his disability, he couldn’t see. The young fan was not able to stand and leave his wheel chair. Due to the high table surface at the Marvel booth, he wasn’t able to watch Walter work his magic. In order to fix the problem, Walter Simonson got up, came around, and sat right beside the young fan. This allowed him to watch Walter at work.
Simonson described it in his own words:
The deal here for those who don’t know, what’s going on here, is that while Gerry Conway, Louise Simoson, Chris Claremont, and I were signing at the Marvel Booth on Sunday, this fan came by. I was doing rapid head sketches for folks, but the Marvel table surface was pretty high and there was no way he would be able to see me drawing. I went around the booth and sat on the floor in front of him so he could see the drawing develop. Chris grabbed this shot, and the sketch even came out pretty well. 🙂
That @WalterSimonson is one class act. Here he is sketching on the floor at NYCC so that a young fan in a wheelchair can watch him draw: pic.twitter.com/jxZIHI2CfC

With a full view, we can see the unnamed fan paying close attention as Walt draws. This is just one example of how he’s a class act when it comes to those who admire his work. That day for this fan must have been something else. Not only did he get to meet someone he admired, but he also got to watch as they went out of their way to make sure he was apart of the process.
Comic Cons are a fantastic place for fans and creators to come together and enjoy an industry that has shaped their lives. With reports of other creators being hostile to fans, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a creator and fan joined together by the art they both love. Walter Simonson is a class act.
