Zatanna Zatara is a stage magician and real life magician. Not only that, but she’s been an active member of the Justice League and Justice League Dark.
Her involvement in the Justice League has led her to run into Batman on a number of occasions.
Identity Crisis
In June 2004, Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales teamed up to give us Identity Crisis. The story follows the mystery of Sue Dibny’s murder. Dibny is the wife of the Elongated Man. It sees the Justice League on edge as the killer begins targeting civilian family members of the League members.
Elongated Man, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Zatanna, Black Canary, Kyle Rayner, and Wally West go after the villain Dr. Light due to his past horrific history with Sue Dibny.
However, Wally doesn’t understand why they are targeting Dr. Light. His questions force Green Arrow to reveal the horrific attack Dr. Light committed against Sue Dibny. But he also reveals how the Justice League dealt with Dr. Light following the attack. Dr. Light’s attack exposed the true weakness of the Justice League, their civilian family members. Atom, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Barry Allen, Zatanna, Black Canary, and Hal Jordan vote to have Zatanna not only wipe Dr. Light’s memory of the horrific attack, but to also alter his personality.
However, while Zatanna was altering Dr. Light’s personality, Batman intervenes and attempts to stop the Justice League members.
In order to prevent Batman from stopping them, the seven Leaguers unanimously vote to have Zatanna wipe Batman’s mind as well.
Green Arrow describes Batman’s rage as he attempted to stop them:
You think you’ve seen him mad, you’ve never see him mad, not like this. It was a tough night for all of us. He came at us in anger. We reacted with the same. No question we panicked. But Carter had it right. With Bruce, the secret would never be safe. Bruce would never stand for it. Not without his say-so. It was a League within the League – just between the seven of us. And right there, we took our second vote of the night. This time, it was unanimous. The alternative would’ve meant the destruction of the league. And although he doesn’t want to believe it, some things are bigger than Batman.
But he wasn’t done there. Green Arrow tries to explain to Wally that Batman knows, “Believe me Wally — the man’s a detective…He always has an idea.”
