CD Projekt Confirms ‘The Witcher Remake’ Will Be A “Story-Driven” Single-Player RPG Experience Set In An Open World
CD Projekt has announced The Witcher remake will be an open-world RPG, though still single player and “story-driven.”
The announcement somewhat elaborated upon the earlier statement The Witcher remake — codenamed Canis Majoris — is a “modern reimagining” that would be “built from the ground up.” The new details were provided in the CD Projekt Group’s Q3 2022 Earnings presentation documents shared on November 28th, as per Video Games Chronicle’s report.
Therein, specifically page 5, it notes that the remake will be a “Story-driven, single player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher.”
Other details are scant at this time. The remake will act as a celebration of The Witcher‘s 15th anniversary, and will make use of Unreal 5 Engine tech. It will utilize the same toolset that will be used for the new Witcher trilogy announced earlier this year.
As last reported, the remake is in early stages of development with Fool’s Theory, a supporter developer who had worked on Outriders, Baldur’s Gate III, and Divinity: Original Sin II, plus the studio’s very own original title, SeVen.
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novel series, The Witcher started the tale of Geralt of Rivia. According to series lore Witchers were monster hunters raised from a young age with a horrific training regime. Geralt springs into action, as someone has stolen mutagens from the School of the Wolf — where he was raised — to stop their misuse.
Throughout the series, players encounter difficult choices that could drastically affect the lives of many. Alliances also need to be chosen carefully, as the enemies you make and future duties could become unpalletable.
In late October, Henry Cavill left Netflix’ live action adaption of The Witcher. Despite rave reviews, Cavill stated in an interview that he would continue to support the series for seven seasons “As long as we can keep telling great stories which honor Sapkowski’s work.”
Since then, fans have been demanding his reinstatement while showrunner Lauren Hisrich has insisted Liam Hemsworth will make a fine Geralt. Only time will tell if The Witcher remake and TV series will suffer or thrive after their dramatic changes.
