CD Projekt Red Announces ‘The Witcher’ Remake, Says It Will Be A “Modern Reimagining”

CD Projekt Red has announced a remake of the first entry in The Witcher series, boasting the upcoming title as a “modern reimagining” of the original and revealing that it will be “built from the ground up.”

First revealed in the developer’s Strategy Update earlier this month — under the codename “Canis Majoris” — The Witcher Remake promises to be a “modern reimagining” of the 2007 game as part of it’s 15th anniversary.

Based on the fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia. Raised as a Witcher from a young age, Geralt offers his services as a monster hunter. As he pursues those who have obtained School of the Wolf’s mutagens to make more Witchers, players are faced with decisions that can affect the lives of many, and alliances that are not made lightly.

Boasting a “ground up” remake with Unreal 5 Engine technology, the game will also use the same toolset CD Projekt Red will employ for the new Witcher trilogy announced earlier this year. Currently, the remake is only in its early stages of development under Fool’s Theory, who had previously supported development of Outriders, Baldur’s Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin II, and their own game SeVen.

The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red,” Head of Studio Adam Badowski stated in a press release. “It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger.”

Badowski explains, “Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games.” The studio’s team boasts “veteran” developers who had worked on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Even so, CD Projekt Red has stated their team is “providing full creative supervision.”

“They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games,” Badowski reassures. “And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

Fool’s Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz also offered his thoughts, declaring, “I am very happy that my professional paths have crossed again with fellow developers from the time of working together on The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Especially when it’s a remake of a project that is so close to our hearts.”

“We are excited to join forces with CD Projekt Red, and our goal is to give players another great game from the iconic Witcher series,” Rokosz concluded.
