DOOM Eternal Creative Director Confirms Game Will Have No Microtransactions, Cosmetics Unlockable With In-Game XP

The highly anticipated DOOM Eternal will release as a complete game and feature no microtransactions, with in-game XP being used solely for cosmetic items.

According to a screenshot provided by Reddit user /u/OnyxsWorkshop, DOOM Eternal Creative Director Hugo Martin confirmed to a fan, in a discussion in the closed Facebook group DOOM 2016/Eternal Fan Club, that the game will have “no store.”

Martin added, “the only thing you can unlock with XP is COSMETICS,” and that the team intends to give players “a complete experience with no store like you’d expect.

“No store. Nothing u can unlock in eternal with XP has anything to do with player abilities or content that would impact your game in anyway. The only thing u can unlock with XP is COSMETICS. These cosmetics have no impact on how u play, they just look cool. Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or a mobile game – we are giving u a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect. Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff or u can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience AT ALL and it’s all free.”

The lack of microtransactions and the return of unlockable in-game cosmetics is a welcome display of respect for players that has become increasingly rare across the video game industry.

Doom Eternal will release for the PC, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and Xbox One on March 20th, with a Switch version planned for release later in the year.
