Warner Bros. Provides First Look At It’s Smash-Style Platform Fighter MultiVersus

Warner Bros. officially announced and revealed a first look at its upcoming free-to-play platform fighting videogame titled MultiVersus.

Rumors about the game began circulating back in October when professional Super Smash Bros. player Juan Manuel “Hungrybox” DeBiedma claimed he received information about the game.

He wrote, “I’ve been provided secret info for the Warner Bros fighter from multiple sources, all corroborating the same claims.”

He added, “Free to Play, Cross Console play, Voice acting for all characters.”

DeBiedma then added that Batman and Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty would be playable.

In a follow-up, DeBiedma shared a screenshot showing off more of the roster including Harley Quinn, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, Shaggy, and others.

Well, DeBiedma’s claims have now been confirmed as Warner Bros. announced via a press release that the game is indeed titled MultiVersus, it’s being developed by Player First Games, and it “introduces a team-based 2 vs. 2 format combined with an ever-expanding cast of iconic characters and legendary universes.”

Warner Bros. Games President David Haddad explained, “With MultiVersus we are creating a distinct competitive game that allows us to combine a deep roster of celebrated WarnerMedia franchises for gamers to enjoy.”

He added, “We are partnering with the talented team at Player First Games to bring together a free-to-play, online platform fighter with a wealth of iconic characters that fans know and love, from Wonder Woman and Bugs Bunny to Shaggy and Arya from Game of Thrones. And this is just the beginning, as we are excited to support upcoming seasons and ongoing game content.”

As for the full roster, they revealed the game will include: 

As for the gameplay, the press release states, “every fighter will be outfitted with a deep set of combat mechanics that distinguish the game’s fresh take on 2 vs. 2 gameplay.”

They continue, “This allows combatants to boast customizable movesets that combine dynamically with other characters as they battle for supremacy.”

Warner Bros. then provides a couple of examples saying, “From Wonder Woman and her Lasso of Truth attack being unexpectedly paired with Shaggy and his sandwich projectile, to Arya Stark’s face-swapping ability being used to complement Superman’s laser vision, the impossible can become possible through surprising team combinations and matchups.”

There will be a number of different arenas where matches will take place. Warner Bros. details, “The game’s fun filled multiplayer bouts can be set against the backdrop of various reimagined environments from awe-inspiring worlds, such as Batman’s Batcave, Jake and Finn’s Tree Fort and many others.”

While Warner Bros. puts the emphasis on the 2 vs. 2 gameplay they also not the game will feature 1 vs. 1 clashes as well as a 4-player free-for-all mode.

Player First Games Co-Founder and Game Director Tony Huynh stated, “MultiVersus is a dream project for our team at Player First Games, and we’re excited to officially reveal the game.”

He added, “We’ve built MultiVersus from the ground up to be a cooperative, social game that embraces teamwork and strategy. We’re also focused on providing first class online gameplay through dedicated server-based rollback netcode so that friends and rivals can enjoy a seamless competitive experience as they duke it out with our diverse roster of characters.”

The game will feature the voice talent of Kevin Conroy as Batman, George Newbern as Superman, Abby Trott as Wonder Woman, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Eric Bauza as Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, John DiMaggio as Jake the Dog, Jeremy Shada as Finn the Human, Daniel DiVenere as Steven Universe, Estelle as Garnet, and Andrew Frankel as Reindog.

The game will arrive on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC with full cross-play support sometime in 2022. Pre-registration for upcoming playtests cane be done at MultiVersus.com.
