Report: James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is Expected to Film in Georgia

The Suicide Squad officially has a filming location, one tried and tested by its director and his usual bosses, though it is a controversial place now.

A source told HN Entertainment the primary shooting location for James Gunn’s film will be Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia. Pinewood is where principal photography for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2 took place and where it is expected to on Vol. 3. — with production reportedly ready to commence after Suicide Squad wraps.

The Suicide Squad should set up shop there sometime in September. It might be a contractual matter, but Gunn is obviously not going the way of his Hollywood compatriots, including ones also with Marvel.

Back in March, a movement spearheaded by actress Alyssa Milano called for a boycott of Georgia if a pro-life fetal-heartbeat bill was passed. Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, and Don Cheadle united behind Milano in her effort.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in an interview with Variety in May his company would “rethink our entire investment in Georgia” if the bill went into effect. Disney CEO Bob Iger seconded the notion by saying producing in the state “will be very difficult.”

Governor Brian Kemp signed it into law earlier that month, and it hasn’t seemed to affect business much. Oscar winner Clint Eastwood started shooting his new movie The Ballad of Richard Jewell in and around Atlanta late last month. Cast member Olivia Wilde signed Milano’s letter that appealed to Hollywood to boycott.

Produced by Warner Bros., Warner Media indicated they would “reconsider” filming more productions in Georgia “if the new law holds.” But, Richard Jewell is based on a true story that took place there and they determined the area was right for the sake of authenticity.

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad filmed in Toronto at another Pinewood studio which served as the home for Shazam! too during its production.

The Suicide Squad has a release date of August 6th, 2021. It stars Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and much of the same cast as before with the additions of Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, David Dastmalchian, and possibly Storm Reid and wrestler John Cena.
