Rumor: Green Lantern Corps Still in “Active Development” at Warner Bros.

There haven’t been many updates but a long-gestating Green Lantern Corps feature film written and produced by Geoff Johns is said to still be in development.

DC Movie News (DCMN) recently posted on Twitter a thread of DC movies on Warner Bros.’ slate in development. Along with Aquaman spinoff The Trench, he lists Green Lantern Corps‘ status as “In development” and says it is in “active development.”

Johns “was expected to deliver a script” draft “by the end of 2019”, says the tweet (below), and adds Johns is also working on the HBO Max GL series with producer/showrunner Greg Berlanti.

No release date or director is designated for either GLC or The Trench but DCMN predicts the latter shall come out first and cites Aquaman producer Peter Safran.

IMDb lists Green Lantern Corps as “announced” and credits Johns as a producer, writer, and story creator. The following plot synopsis is offered though it can’t be completely confirmed:

“The story centers on the Green Lanterns of Earth (Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner) and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps as they fight an interstellar war against the Sinestro Corps, an army led by the former Green Lantern Sinestro who are armed with yellow power rings and seek [a] universe ruled through fear.”

If accurate, it sounds like Johns intends to adapt the Sinestro Corps War which was written by Johns. We reported it may also be tapped into for the HBO Max series. This could indicate the feature-film project is getting folded into the show though there’s been no leak or announcement of that.

Note as well the storyline centers on four Lanterns from Earth. Two or three of those – Stewart, Rayner, and possibly Hal – are expected to headline HBO Max’s Green Lantern series.

Two different live-action GL iterations may lift from the same material at the same time, and have the same main characters, although it’s more likely one project will give way to the other.

IMDB’s info may be out of date. Remember that Zack Snyder’s Justice League sequels were still listed there after he was let go by WB.

Geoff Johns stepped down as President of DC Entertainment in 2018 and founded Mad Ghost Productions to focus on creating DC-based content for film and TV. His first major project was meant to be Green Lantern Corps.

On his Mad Ghost Productions website the Green Lantern film is still listed with the following synopsis, “Once of DC Comics’ greatest Super Hero universes, the film will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart…”

Some evidence suggests his departure might not have been a smooth or amicable process. Former DC Entertainment Co-Pres. Diane Nelson remarked Johns is “no buddy of mine” in September when the opportunity arose. Nelson was looked at as “closely aligned” with unceremoniously ousted former Warner CEO Kevin Tsujihara.

New CEO Ann Sarnoff is a friend of J.J. Abrams who signed a first-look deal with WB. Abrams may have designs on a Green Lantern flick and his plans could nullify any Johns has.

Johns’ next big DC-related “story by” credit is Wonder Woman 1984 (with Patty Jenkins) which, so far, hasn’t been delayed by Coronavirus like No Time To Die and so many others.
