First Synopsis For ‘Superman: Legacy’ Directed By James Gunn Released, Brings Back “Truth, Justice, And The American Way” Motto
Warner Bros. just released the first official synopsis for the reboot Superman: Legacy that wipes the slate clean for the Man of Steel in the new DCU brought to us by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios. Dealing with a younger Superman not played by Henry Cavill, Legacy’s summary has something that will please fans.

The synopsis, as follows, brings back the tried-and-true motto Superman is renowned for, “Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Gunn, who is now attached to direct, teased what will shape his Superman in a Twitter update. “Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes,” he wrote.
Gunn added he didn’t initially want to direct but finally caved to the pestering of Safran and others. “So I chose to finally take on writing the script. But I was hesitant to direct, despite the constant pestering by Peter Safran and others to commit (sorry, Peter),” he said. Currently, however, he’s ready to go “#UpUpandAway.”
Additionally, Gunn hopes his movie will be “a four-quadrant film that should speak to everyone in the world.” Safran is co-producing and calls Superman: Legacy the start of their DCU. Beyond all that, we know next to nothing about the story but the speculation is roaring. One theory seeks to frame the film within the larger shared universe being built.
The Direct posits Gunn and Safran may borrow from the Joe Kelly story What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way? A tale introducing The Elite, Gunn could take the opportunity to bring The Authority to the big screen – a group that is coming to the DCU and a major inspiration for The Elite. Superman: Legacy is out in July 2025.
