Alyssa Wong to Write Marvel Comics’ New Doctor Aphra Star Wars Comic

Alyssa Wong, the Overwatch writer who called Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski a racist, will be writing a brand new Doctor Aphra Star Wars comic for Marvel Comics.

The announcement was made during London’s MCM Comic Con.

Wong confirmed the new book on Twitter writing, “Looks like the Star Wars cat it out of the bag! I’m writing the new Doctor Aphra comics!”

She added, “So excited to work with Marika Cresta, Valentine Remenar, Mark Paniccia, and Tom Groneman on this!!”

The current Doctor Aphra series will end with Doctor Aphra #40.

This new series is expected to debut in April 2020.

Darth Vader

Along with the new Doctor Aphra series, it also appears there will be a new Darth Vader series from Greg Pak with cover art work by In-Hyuk Lee and Raffaele Ienco. The series is expected to debut in February 2020.

This new Doctor Aphra series follows an announcements at New York Comic Con that they were relaunching the main Star Wars comics.

Star Wars

The new Star Wars series will be written by Charles Soule with art by Jesus Saiz. R.B. Silva will be providing cover art.

The series is expected to take place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Soule spoke with StarWars.com about the series detailing that it will start in a dark place, “And it should be dark because we’re coming up from arguably one of the darkest endings of the whole saga and you have to honor that…It starts from a place where all of our heroes are very demoralized. It’s not necessarily a story about a villain, which is what Darth Vader was. It’s a story about heroes who have to pull themselves together and that’s a cool story to tell.”

It will also give Soule a chance to return to Lando Calrissian and explore his story following his betrayal of Han Solo. Soule previously wrote a Lando miniseries.

He discussed how he’ll approach Lando, “At the end of Empire, he’s not really a good guy. He betrayed everybody and sort of came around at the end. How did he go from there to being a general who led the Falcon into Death Star II?”
