Disney CEO Bob Iger: Avengers: Endgame “Represents the End of a Chapter…Not the End of the Book”

Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger attended the World Premiere for Avengers: Endgame where he declared the film “represents the end of a chapter in the canon that is Marvel.”

Iger stated, “Yes, we are bringing the Endgame. In many respects this represents the end of a chapter in the canon that is Marvel. Not the end of the book, but the end of a chapter.” Iger adds, “I think one of the most exciting, certainly one of the most successful in the motion picture business.”

Take a listen:

Iger’s comments echo Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s comments he made last summer about the film.

In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Feige declared that Avengers: Endgame would have a “definitive ending.”

“But, storylines can come to an end. The best stories do come to an end. Return of the Jedi was an ending for a long time and as a 10-year-old in 1983 that carried me through 30 years until there was a sequel. That hasn’t happened before in the superhero genre. A new actor comes in and a new storyline starts right away. We wanted to do it this way because we think that the best stories have a definitive ending to a storyline. That’s certainly what’s going to happen next year with Avengers 4.”

And while it appears Endgame will certainly be an ending, there are definitely plans already in the works to continue the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iger and Disney announced earlier this month that they will be developing TV shows for Disney+ with MCU tie-ins including a show surrounding Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastasion, and WandaVision starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. There are also rumors of a Hawkeye and Hulk TV show.

Not only are they expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe onto their upcoming streaming platform, but they also plan to continue to produce more movies. They are definitely working on an Eternals movie as well as a Black Widow movie. It was also confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also be happening with James Gunn as the director. Feige also confirmed a Doctor Strange sequel. There will also more than likely be a Black Panther sequel. There have also been reports of a Shang-Chi movie.

What do you make of Iger’s comments about Avengers: Endgame being the end of a chapter rather than a book? Do you think this could mean that Thanos might survive Endgame?
