We are almost a year away from the release of Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) written and directed by James Gunn. The cast is all set and production is underway, but we have not seen what star David Corenswet will look like in costume as the Man of Steel – until now!

The first image of the actor in the new Super suit custom made for him has officially been released, and it reveals some key details we have wondered about.

First, take a gander at Corenswet suited up below for yourself courtesy of Discussing Film on Twitter/X (whatever you wish to call the app).

The image shows Corenswet putting his boots on perfunctorily in an apartment as if he is getting ready to go to work. Something is happening in the background so duty may call.

A laser is either being fired down from the sky or up at something entering the atmosphere. If it’s a hint at things to come, we may be looking at the first tease of Brainiac who is rumored to appear or evidence of Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) diabolical plot.

The background could also be a mere AI-generated image with no plot implications that was used for the above promo shot because it looks cool. We won’t put that past Gunn, but we’re only speculating.

As far as the costume, it is a mix of old and new. Bits of classic Super iconography like the spitcurl are back – as are the muscleman trunks and belt if you look close. Those details by themselves live up to the meaning of ‘Legacy.’

On the other hand, the suit looks a lot closer to the design introduced in The New 52, particularly with the addition of the slight turtleneck variation on the collar that’s higher than the cape.

Then there is the Kingdom Come-inspired logo which, more than a departure from the cinematic norm, is faded and beat up. This makes it passingly reminiscent of the logo and costume worn by Tyler Hoechlin in Superman & Lois.

Superman (nee Legacy) has a secret plot for now, but we know it costars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Cathegi as Mr. Terrific, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.

It has been predicted those latter castings mean we will be treated to an early form of the Justice League (or Society) in the rebooted, refreshed DCU, but that’s only a rumor for now. Expect it to be confirmed or debunked when we draw closer to July 2025 and Superman’s release.
