Netflix’s The Witcher actor Henry Cavill confirmed he’s still locked up the role of DC Comics’ Superman.
While making a trip to the House of Secrets comic shop in Burbank, Cavill did note he’s been disconnected from what’s happening in the comic book world. It’s unclear if he’s referring to the actual comics or his role as Superman. He tells Men’s Health:
“I’ve been quite disconnected from all of this for quite a while. I’m very behind.”
However, he confirmed he’s not done with Superman. The British actor told them, “The cape is in the closet.” He added, “It’s still mine.”
He would elaborate on this.
“I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

The actor also reflected on his three appearances as Superman. On Man of Steel, Cavill states, “A great starting point. If I were to go back, I don’t think I’d change anything.”
He didn’t have much to say on Batman v Superman, “Very much a Batman movie. And I think that realm of darkness is great for a Batman movie.” But he was rather candid about Justice League, “It didn’t work.”
Cavill’s confirmation comes a little over a year after The Hollywood Reporter stated that Cavill exited the role of Superman citing that Warner Bros. was shifting their focus to a Supergirl film and that Cavill took the role of The Witcher after negotiations to reprise his role as Superman fell through.
That report would be quickly rebuffed by Warner Bros. and Cavill’s agent Dany Garcia.

Garcia, who also represents Black Adam actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wrote on Twitter:
“Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. Warner Bros. Pictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.”

Warner Bros. would then release their statement:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
Cavill would even share a cryptic Instagram video saying, “Today was exciting #Superman.” The video shows Cavill lifting up a Superman doll and putting it back down as Johann Strauss’ The Blue Danube Waltz plays with a dog barking along.

However, rumors about Cavill’s departure from Superman would soon arise again following reports that Warner Bros. signed a deal with J.J. Abrams. Those rumors involve Abrams taking on both Green Lantern and Superman and that he would look to cast a younger Superman.
It definitely appears that Cavill is putting those rumors to bed.
Not only did Cavill confirm he’s still Superman, but he also discussed his workout routines and why he takes his training to such a high level.
“I’m representing important characters here. I don’t want to be a dumpy Geralt or a fat Superman.”

Cavill then details how he feels after getting in shape.
“I know what it feels like to go from out of shape to in shape and [afterward] I’ll look at myself like, ‘Man, well done.’ It’s not like I’m a golden god—I’m just proud of what I achieved. And then you can take your clothes off in front of your significant other, and they’re like, ‘Goddamn, you look great!’ Like, ‘Yes! I’m making other people happy.’”
What do you think? Will Henry Cavill be able to find a way to keep the cape on? Or will this be an uphill battle that ends with a new Superman? Let me know your thoughts on Cavill’s comments!
