According to a new Deadline report, the long-delayed sequel may get bumped from its early October release to either November or December, depending on whether or not theaters remain closed in major cities.

“With New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco movie theaters still not open, our exhibition sources are hearing that Warner Bros is apt to move Wonder Woman 1984 again, this time out of its current October 2 date to either sometime in November or possibly to late December,” said Deadline.

This delay would also bump Dune, another Warner Bros. release, “out of its December 18 weekend to sometime in 2021”

Deadline also notes that “Legendary and Warners still need to sort out a release-date change for Dune if a move to 2021 is going to happen,” which suggest that the studio was not prepared for yet another delay.

Another factor being considered in the delay is the wide-release of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which theaters are depending on  to entice audiences into seats, as “having Wonder Woman 1984 in Tenet‘s way won’t help its hopeful domestic tail at the box office.”

Wonder Woman 1984 has been fraught with delays and scheduling troubles, which have only been exacerbated by the unusual conditions of the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

Initially slated for a November 2019 release, the film was first pushed back to Summer 2020 to better pace WB’s release schedule, a decision endorsed by director Patty Jenkins despite her eager desire for fans to see the movie as soon as possible.

A few months ago, amidst fears that the film would wind up as a VOD release without a theatrical run, studio representatives assured theater owners that Wonder Woman 1984 would first debut on the big screen.

There’s also concern that the delay to Wonder Woman 1984 could have the film facing off in theaters against Marvel’s Black Widow, as many believe “it would be tentpole suicide” for the two films to release in a similar time frame.

Interestingly, the latest trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, which debuted at the recent DC FanDome event, did not include a concrete release date.

Do you think Wonder Woman 1984 will be delayed again? Do you think there’s a chance the film could skip theaters and head directly to VOD? Would yet another delay test your patience for its release? Let us know on social media or in the comments down below!
