X-Men: Dark Phoenix Flames Out At Box Office

20th Century Fox and Disney’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix flamed out at the box office.

The film brought in $32.8 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. It has fared better in the global market with a $103.7 million haul. The film has currently earned $136.7 million worldwide.

The opening weekend box office haul of $32.8 million is the worst domestic opening weekend an X-Men film has ever done. The previous worst was The Wolverine which brought in $53.1 million.

Disney expected the film would bring in $45 million on opening weekend. It definitely didn’t hit that mark. In fact, it vastly under performed.

Making matters worse the movie has horrible critic and audience scores. The Rotten Tomatoes critic score currently sits at 23%. The more important All Audience Score sits at 61%. The movie also received a B- Cinemascore. That means the film might not have legs after it’s opening weekend.

And new reports indicate the film might lose between $100 million and $120 million.

Deadline reports “finance experts tell us that the tale of Jean Grey will burn out with an estimated $100M-$120M loss after ancillaries, off a combined production and P&A estimated cost of $350M+ (which includes reshoots).”

Projected totals for the film indicate it will earn between $300 million and $325 million. However, one finance expert told Deadline, “If it drops like a stone, $285M. Don’t forget it was a holiday in China, and even that was pretty low ($45.7M).

What do you make of X-Men: Dark Phoenix’s complete bomb at the box office? What do you think caused the film to flame out on opening weekend?
