Sony Buys Cinemersive Labs, a UK-Based AI Startup for 3D Technology

In the latest news of brands acquiring AI in hopes of advancing their games, Sony buys Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based startup that specializes in camera technology for AR/VR experiences.
Sony Interactive Entertainment, owner of PlayStation, hopes to use the startup’s developing tools to convert 2D photos and videos into 3D volumes. Supposedly, the machine-learning company will assist Sony in the improvement of visual computing technology within games, including AI-enhanced gameplay visuals, rendering techniques, and improvements to visual fidelity.

According to the official blog post on Sony Interactive Entertainment, the brand is “continually exploring new ways to push the boundaries of visual computing and deliver richer, more immersive gameplay experiences.”
“Founded in 2022, Cinemersive Labs brings together a specialized team with deep expertise in computer vision and machine learning.”
The post goes on, saying that “following the acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will join SIE’s Visual Computing Group and contribute to our broader efforts in advancing state-of-the-art visual computing within games. This includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players.”

Sony has focused on machine learning when it comes to improving graphical performance on the PlayStation 5, as well as future hardware. The PS5 Pro was designed with a custom AI upscaling tech that helped the console run games at a lower resolution and then upscale them at 4K.
This might not be a shock to many, as the recent news of Nvidia showing off their new DLSS 5, which is said to use generative AI for graphical improvements. NVIDIA was bashed for it, and most recently resent the use of AI in the gaming industry, but it seems as though brands are taking the leap to test out AI in their process.
What is shocking is that this acquisition is happening after Sony shut down Bluepoint Games, the developer behind many acclaimed remakes and other projects. Along with that, Sony recently closed Dark Outlaw Games, the studio founded by a former Call of Duty developer.
