After The Super Bowl, Queen Latifah’s The Equalizer Has Surprisingly Strong Viewership, Ratings Don’t Look So Good
Following the Super Bowl, Queen Latifah’s reboot of The Equalizer had surprisingly strong viewership numbers, but it’s ratings were a different story.
According to TV Series Finale, the second episode of The Equalizer brought in 7.976 million viewers with a .90 rating in the 18-49 demographic for CBS.
As you can see the show significantly declined from 20.404 million in its first episode to 7.976 million in its second episode. You might be thinking that’s a huge drop and as TV Series Finale points out it lost over 60% of its viewers.

However, if you go back and look at the past shows that debuted following the Super Bowl and their second episodes, The Equalizer looks to have over performed when it comes to viewership numbers.
In 2020, The Masked Singer Season 3 aired on Fox to 23.731 million following the Super Bowl. In it’s second episode viewership declined to 7.445 million. Despite having more people tune in to watch following the Super Bowl, The Masked Singer was unable to outperform The Equalizer’s second episode.
The Equalizer had over 531,000 people more tune in to watch its second episode over The Masked Singer. However, there is a problem when you look at the 18-49 demographic. The Masked Singer was able to keep a rating of 2.02 in this coveted advertiser demographic. The Equalizer only had a .90 rating.
It more than likely means that quite a bit of the people tuning into The Equalizer are outside of the 18-49 demographic and more than likely are on the older side.
If you go back to 2019, The Equalizer’s second episode also outperformed CBS’ The World’s Best.
The World’s Best saw viewership clock in at 22.206 million following the Super Bowl. In it’s second episode it fell all the way to 5.555 million. However, it did manage a 1.02 rating in its second episode besting The Equalizer.
Like The Masked Singer, The Equalizer kept a much larger audience for its second episode. In fact, it had over 2.421 million people more tune in.
The Equalizer is also performing strongly compared to the rest of CBS’ scripted lineup.
TV Series Finale has it sitting in the top spot for average viewers, although the Super Bowl has a lot to do with that. However, even if you factor out the first episode, it would still be the third most viewed show on the network by average viewership. It would also be the second highest rated show in the 18-49 demographic just behind FBI.
It’ll be interesting to see if The Equalizer is able to have legs throughout its first season. The show’s Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes is not a good sign. It currently sits at 31%.
On IMDB, it has a weighted average of 4.2 out of 10.
What do you make of The Equalizer’s viewership numbers and ratings? Do you think it will be able to maintain these numbers?
